@TheHonestNFL vs EMPTY how would you advise the Nickel to play the “Deep Hook”

@TheHonestNFL What coverage tendencies are common for the defense when there’s 5 in the charge?

• Man-to-Man • Squat • Quarters • Tight 1/3 (No 2-to-1) • Clue 1/3 (2-to-1 Read) If you can play these techniques well, you’ll fit into Fangio’s defense as a Corner and he’ll make it work for you.

@TheHonestNFL Thank you, that makes sense the way you explained. Although it may not be as common in the NFL, I’d be curious to see how the Fangio system distributes 4-strong concepts.

@johnlarkin_nwp If you have a great Nickel who can handle #2 deep up the seam, then Book is probably the best 4-over-3 3x1 coverage concept you can play. The Nickel is really the main vulnerability of that coverage, so if your Nickel can negate that, you’re really cooking with gas.

@TheHonestNFL What would be the advantages/disadvantages of playing book vs buster? Does it come down to the strengths of the player who is playing corner?

Also, the “concepts to know” is just within the context of the system I use. This isn’t preaching that everyone needs to know these and classify it how I do. All of these are just ripped from the manual I use to teach it (that will be uploaded at some point before the summer).

Ever wonder what: Cover 2 is? Cover 4 is? Cover 6 is? The @Eagles use it as a staple and they’re ELITE at it.

Indiana cover 2 replacement pressure vs Ohio State. Bring the nickel star tot he field. Drop the DE to the boundary. strong side-mike curl SS-deep 1/2, cb flat 2-1 Weak safety plays the middle hole The weak cb plays deep 1/2, de to the boundary has the curl and the weak LB has the flat. Great scheme and execution.

@TheHonestNFL What would the proper name/tag be for this push alert we see in the under coverage?

HB Orbit to 4x1 Spacing with Brown isolated. Very nice Quarters distribution with a Push alert.

@kurt13warner Yes, in that case if you’d have to like your 1-on-1 with the slant. The breakdown you showed seems to be more sound from a progression perspective; especially with hi-lo of the Mike. Deep over would likely be by GP.

@johnlarkin_nwp But don’t forget their is a CB over there - so under defender could grab slant and deeper defender be there for over… if you run Poppin that whole concept stays frontside and you overload their numbers there!

I’m seeing more teams run 4-Strg plays, the most popular play call is “Popcorn”, in this video I show WHY I would rather run “Poppin” from that formation to fully take advantage of WHY I’m overloading the D with 4 guys in the first place! @TheHonestNFL I’d love to see more concepts like Deacon implemented. Short motion AJ to the bunch to get the ID, then execute. Felt like some of their best plays came from Mesh last season.

@TheHonestNFL Looked like Jalen read the progression #2 -> #3 then resetting to hammer backside. My question is why make what’s designed to be a short, easy completion into a longer throw by aligning the HB to the bottom of #’s when the ball is on the opposite hash?

Bass Hammer from Empty again, but they actually get true Cover 3 here and Hurts doesn’t rip the flat element when he gets free access and tons of room. These plays should never make it to the call sheet if you’re not willing to execute it properly. Concepts like this are completion plays that are designed to take the easy yards if the defense is covering it inside-out like they should. They’ll just squeeze inside and take the inside routes away without fear of leaving the outside route open. They’re obviously not Jalen’s cup of tea, which is fine, but they’re not worth having if that’s the case.
Honest NFL@TheHonestNFL

This is a pretty basic 1Hi/2Hi structure read against Fire Zone. Bass frontside for 1Hi, Hammer backside for 2Hi. This is a bad throw that you’d think was tipped, but I don’t believe it was. It’s tough when you run a lot of what I call “completion” concepts like these Hank variants and can’t actually get completions on them for whatever reason. A lot of the time I don’t think they’re used well, but this one is just poorly executed. Rough, inconsistent outing for Hurts yesterday. These needs to be completions, and too many of them weren’t.

@TheHonestNFL It seemed like they ran Hammer a handful of times. Off topic, but I think it’s important to note we’re not seeing as many check down options to the HB in the middle of the field like in past seasons. Simple way to stay “on-track” while running the downfield concept they like.
