@friebos Hi Dan. A (not very interesting) query. Can anyone explain the physics behind the 'throw'. To throw creates an opposite reaction which is the person going backwards in the saddle. At best, cancels forward momentum generated, at worst slows the bike down at the finish.

@friebos Yes good shout. Certainly a possibility. Guessing it was case of trying 2 make least worst decision in circumstances. Think struck a balance between giving stage winner moment of glory under the arches (keep sponsors happy) while diluting risk of having mass riders at full tilt

@jon_owtcc What if a guy in the break had slid out on some mud and lost his chance? It's still not entirely clear what was dangerous/substandard about those last 2.6km.

2.6km lopped off the final climb for GC purposes - basically the steep bit. Finale decaffeinated/decapitated.

@friebos It doesn't affect the breakaway's ability, and individual riders within it, to win the stage though? So not sure it's that much if an issue. Stage winner still gonna have their name in the record books. It won't reference where the GC time was taken.

Find this hard to understand. Basically telling guys who come to a race like the Vuelta to hunt stages - i.e. everyone in the break - that their goals are less important than those of GC riders. Because both races within the race could be equally affected by conditions.
