@Yurks_Cards @things_sox Mead also clearly has no future with this team, with a glut of infielders hopefully on their way up (Antonacci first). Peters and Hill likely don't either, but it's kind of silly to pay Mead $780K to sit on the bench when you know you're going to DFA him in 2 weeks.

@Yurks_Cards @things_sox Mead would have no role. He’s a worse hitter than Sosa and worse defender than Acuna (Hill and Peters are solid defensively when Acuna plays in). Peters is at least left-handed, which might mean nothing to you, but it does to Venable.

I can’t believe the Chicago White Sox are beginning the year with “Tristan Peters,” “Derek Hill” and “Everson Pereira” on the 40-man. There HAS to be better options somewhere. Might have rather thrown Curtis Mead in the outfield at that point.

@Cocogir35899341 @Sam_Phalen Quero obviously has the most value, but if the plan was to trade him, they would have kept Lee (RHH) over signing McGuire (LHH). Teel and Lee will get plenty of ABs at DH. They also have no major-league ready C depth in the organization if someone were to get hurt.

#WhiteSox keep the extra outfielder in Tristan Peters over Curtis Mead. Everything else is in line with what we expected. The roster is set.

I just don’t see a world where we couldn’t have traded Lee. SOME return would be better than nothing

@Cocogir35899341 @Sam_Phalen I don't disagree but that appears to be the way they're going. They didn't pay McGuire $1.2M to make 4 starts over 2 weeks as backup C, just to DFA him.

@Sean_W_Anderson @Tre67777892 That's true about Brooks. Vargas and Meidroth would get plenty of opportunities against RHP even if Antonacci is up (especially Vargas, I think the team knows that Meidroth is a future utility guy).

@jongellar @Tre67777892 Brooks can be a LH option at 2B/3B when he gets back. I know his defense is suspect at every position at the moment. I do think they have to use the first two months to see what they have in Vargas and Meidroth. I want to see them vs. same handedness pitching.

@KenWo4LiFe Most people aren't complaining about Lee, they're complaining about the decision to go with 3 catchers once Teel is healthy. I think everyone assumed that Lee would be cut in a couple weeks, but McGuire won't be.

@JustinChVelasco Antonacci yes, but I don't see a reason to have Bergolla up (if everyone else is healthy).

I think Antonacci, Bergolla JR, & Teel could all come up sometime in April with the way it's set up.

@Sean_W_Anderson @Tre67777892 You could be right. I forgot they also need a roster spot for Teel (assuming they're keeping McGuire). But having Antonacci as a LH infielder (they don't have good LH options at 2B or 3B except Murakami) would/will make more sense than bringing Acuna in for these AAAA guys.

@Sean_W_Anderson @Tre67777892 Yeah, if he was claimed, the Sox would be off the hook. But there's a good chance he wouldn't be claimed (the team would have to keep him on their active roster because he's out of options).

@jongellar @Tre67777892 wouldn’t “saving money” depend on if he wasn’t claimed on waivers? if a team claims him and he’s on their 40-man, they assume the contract. i hear you on the role part. Mead would have mainly spelled Vargas to start the season. there is no true point to it.

@The_Lambert right but that could have just been Mead. Peters has options so won’t have to clear waivers when Teel/Baldwin are back.

@Tre67777892 @Sean_W_Anderson Antonacci will likely be up in a few weeks, and they'll send Peters down. And Hill will go down for Baldwin. Then the roster will make more sense.

He wouldn't have started over Sosa, and as a defensive replacement it makes more sense to move Acuna into the IF and put Hill or Peters in the OF. This saves the team $700K (Mead's salary would've become fully guaranteed if he made the roster).

@NotCease Maybe for the start of the season, but I think they expect Antonacci to be called up very soon (April 15?). No point in paying Curtis Mead to be an extra RH infielder for a few weeks when Acuna can fill that role. Once Antonacci is up the roster will make more sense.

Looks like the bench for the White Sox to start the year will be: - Reese McGuire - Lenyn Sosa - Tristan Peters - Derek Hill - Everson Pereira I’d expect Luisangel Acuña to see a bit more middle infield time than expected.
