William Saliba is a Rolls Royce of a defender & undoubtedly one of the best in the world. To lose one half of our formidable central defensive pairing before the season’s even started is such a massive blow. I’ve got no idea how long he’ll be out for but the club’s statement uses the words ‘extended period’ which can’t be good. You can talk about depth all you want, there aren’t many Saliba’s in the game; let alone at one club…

@StueyR1981 @charles_watts What are you moaning about? They are decent players but you HAVE overpaid. Charles isn't ridiculing it. Other teams occasionally overpay too. If Arsenal take Rogers for £100m+ they will have overpaid there. Same with Barcola for £120m or Alvarez for £150m. None are world class.

Think Tonali and Fernandes are really good signings for Spurs. The market is bonkers and they've obviously overpaid. It's no surprise others have not gone to those prices for those players. Spurs aren't in a position to squabble about prices though. They have to make a statement this summer, to their fans more than anything, that they mean business. And those two in midfield improve them massively, no doubt about that. You would think the Tonali deal makes Bruno and even tougher one for Arsenal to do this summer. Surely Newcastle won't budge over their stance on him now.

Now we’ve all had a while to think about it… Penalty? I’m still not sure. I expected it to be given - as there was contact - but I can see why it wasn’t. And if the ref thought it was a dive… why didn’t he book Kane?

You are free to disagree with me, but let us talk about Victor Gyökeres' performance in this World Cup. For sure, I never thought Victor Gyökeres would finish this World Cup with just one goal. Yet, in the first game of the group stage, his team scored five goals. For sure, something went wrong. I saw that in the first game, when he was playing with Havertz, the partnership was working. But after that game, everything fell apart. Now I see why Mikel Arteta always benched this player. Maybe his potential is not at the level many of us thought. Now I am no longer wondering why Mikel Arteta is searching for another striker, and why there are rumours about selling him. There is a possibility that Victor Gyökeres is not the player we think he is. Don't get me wrong, I stand to be corrected.

Had a fair few replies from Villa fans after I said I felt £130m for Morgan Rogers is too much. The reality is, the market has gone nuts & so while Villa are well within their rights to look around at other deals and price their player accordingly, we’re also entitled to feel that’s an excessive amount of money. Two things can be true at once 🤷🏻‍♂️

I like Ebs, but if I'm being honest, I wasn't impressed by his performances last season. Some fans will argue he was brought in during a difficult period after Kai Havertz's injury, and that's fair. But Arsenal are aiming for the very top, and every player has to justify their place in the squad. With Morgan Rogers reportedly on the way and many fans still backing Ødegaard, competition for places is only going to increase. For me, Merino and Havertz are currently untouchable. Moving around, still trying to find a stable platform to prove that “future star” tag. “Joe Willock is going to explode, don’t sell him” - where is he now? Newcastle made the move, he had his moments, but Arsenal didn’t exactly lose a Ballon d’Or winner either. “Emile Smith Rowe is a mistake to sell” - where is he now? Injuries, inconsistency, struggling to nail down a defining role. “Chido Obi is generational, we must keep him” - still early days, hype is loud, reality is still unwritten. “Alexandre Lacazette should’ve been sold instead of Balogun” - where is he now? Back in France, productive but not exactly rewriting European football. “Charlie Patino is the next Wilshere, don’t let him go” - where is he now? Lower-profile moves, still searching for that breakthrough narrative. “Amario Cozier-Duberry is Saka regen, we’ll regret this” - where is he now? Promising talent, but promise is not the same as Premier League impact. And that brings me to the real question… If Arsenal sell Ethan Nwaneri tomorrow, are we genuinely convinced the outcome will be different? Or are we just repeating the same cycle of hype, emotion, and hindsight… while ignoring how development actually works in elite football?

Absolutely right that Thomas Tuchel says Jude Bellingham has to fight for his starting place. Every player should. Sport is about *checks notes* competition. Bellingham is in competition with Morgan Rogers for the No 10 slot against Croatia in Dallas. Just as John Stones is in competition with Ezri Konsa for the right-sided centre-back slot. Just as Marcus Rashford is in competition with Anthony Gordon (possibly Rogers) to start on England’s left wing (as well as the Barcelona sub-plot). Competition is good, performance-related, a sign of depth of resources. Tuchel is fortunate that club academies, PL and EFL, and England development teams have deepened the competition with good coaching, resources and facilities. They’ve given him some exceptional options. Whoever he picks, Tuchel has talent to attack this tournament. England are, rightly, far from favourites (I've never known such balanced expectations) but they do have talent. Build-up to this World Cup has been quite low-key from an England perspective, partly the long lead-in time, concerns over the tournament, cost, climate, expansion, and usual distracted reflections on the club season. That will change when the tournament kicks off. As usual. There's still inevitable debate about who could/should start. I spoke to England fans out here in Florida about who they’d pick. Small sample of opinion tbf but consensus of hoping Bellingham, Stones and Rashford win those fights (nb some support for Konsa over Stones). Bellingham is a big-game player, a winner, and doesn’t give the ball away in sapping conditions (nb Dallas air-con). Stones brings experience, composure, and an ability to step into midfield to give England an extra dimension. Why take Stones if he’s not going to start? Rashford is flying, coming off a strong season, has experience, and his pace will scare opposing defences. One fan suggested Rogers off the left. Tuchel still has two games to finalise XI for Dallas – Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday and the scrimmage game v Miami United. He has to assess fitness, partnerships and options. Dallas is still 9 days away. My XI would be: Pickford; James, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane. But this is also the World Cup of back-ups, and subs will play a huge role. #ENG

Mikel Arteta, it's time to make that professional decision. We have seen coaches like Pep Guardiola, José Mourinho, and Carlo Ancelotti take this decision to move their teams forward. Let's use Pep as an example. We saw Pep make some bold decisions to advance the team. Let's start with Yaya Touré; he was one of the major pillars holding City when Pep arrived, but things changed for him. Nunes was signed as a midfielder, and Pep changed his position to right back. Gonzalez—name them. Mikel needs to make that decision for the coming season, starting with Eberechi Eze, Martin Ødegaard, Viktor Gyökeres, Gabriel Martinelli, Noni Madueke, and Ben White. These players need to know they're good players, but we want to move to another level, which means the project is now bigger than them.

My view on this: Dyed in the wool football fans well remember the outrage when live, top-flight football first ‘disappeared’ onto Sky Sports in the early 1990s and diehards said it would totally ruin the game. Undeterred, my dear buddies David Hill (Hilly) and Vic Wakeling took TV sports coverage by the scruff of the neck and fundamentally changed football forever. Monday night football, multiple camera angles, even the ubiquitous score and clock bug in the top left corner of the screen, felt revolutionary when the creative disruptor and master builder took to the stage. Suddenly football looked brighter, slicker and much more dramatic. There were even cheerleaders and rock bands on occasion although this was perhaps a Pom Pom too far? Nevertheless, the influx of cash from Sky transformed the sport providing the money for significantly improved stadia for domestic fans and AAA access to eager global audiences tuning in to enjoy the magic of world-class players. This is the awkward truth in the current row over TNT and the Champions League Final. Fans (including the PM) understandably want huge national sporting moments to be free-to-air, especially as the CLF was available free last year. The uncomfortable truth though is that modern football was built on subscription television. It just was. Many nay-sayers will wax lyrical about how much they hate the cost, but surely they must concede that pay TV money fundamentally changed English football from a crumbling domestic sport into the global entertainment giant it is today. In my opinion, the moral panic over TNT putting the ArsenalvPSG match behind a £5 paywall on HBO Max is completely detached from the economic reality of the sport we love. Expecting broadcasters to swallow a multi-billion-pound rights fee to then give away their crown jewel on YouTube for free is frankly for the birds. Someone has to foot the bill. Come on you Gunners.
