I reached the summit of Mt Everest yesterday. The whole expedition was a fantastic experience and the summit push couldn’t have gone better - arriving just as dawn broke. Very lucky. @mit @MITSloan #ireland #sligo

I couldn’t be happier for my friend and colleague @baselinescene , who won the #NobelPrize today. Incredible recognition for his work. 10 yrs ago he brought me into the Global Economics and Management faculty group at #MIT . We have published and taught together since, including, I’m proud to say, cofounding a course on #AI that was the 1st of its kind (on offer to MIT students again in Spring). The picture below is from the first time we taught that class together. Simon has mentored and supported me throughout. Every time he crosses the corridor to my office to discuss his latest thinking, I know I’m going to learn something. Also delighted for @DAcemogluMIT a Nobel co-recipient today - an incredible MIT colleague and a giant in the field. Can you believe I get paid to work with people like this! @MITSloan

@mark_cummins Don't think it went into escrow until '18. Would still be €50Bn had we invested in APPL. Shows challenge with the SWF investing tho - diversification might suggest avoiding sectors we are reliant on for CorpTax. Problem is, this is likely where lots of equity growth will occur

The Ireland/Apple tax case put €13b in escrow, where it sat, presumably in zirp bonds, for ten years. Today it's worth €13.8b. If it had been invested in Apple stock, it would be €130b. Ireland's sovereign wealth fund could do the funniest thing with our tax surplus.

Take away: scaled up, reliable quantum computers remain some years away, but the digital security implications need to be tackled much sooner. I learned: if lattice based approaches become ineffective we have few/no alternatives. That keeps cryptographers awake at night !!

@realBobbyHealy @lexfridman @MIT Your's might have been the better lecture - but he out dressed you - some man for a sharp suit ! I was on to him recently about coming to Ireland, I wanted to show him some serious mountain scenery. I'll say it again when I see him.

@realBobbyHealy @lexfridman @lexfridman and I used to teach an AI course together @MIT. He had to bow out because of other commitments. So I brought in some external people for certain lectures - including YOU, two years ago ! Small world.

My Makalu expedition is over. No opportunity for summit push given timing of work commitments butcoming home healthy and happy. Makalu remains the highest mountain unclimbed by an Irish person. I wish whoever makes the next attempt all the luck in the world. ☘️
