New Yorkers United for Child Care
Parents have had kids in NYC b/c they thought they could count on universal 3-K & Pre-K. But b/c @NYCMayor has made millions of $$ in cuts to our free child care, thousands are left without the care they were promised. We're fighting back: united4childcare.org/join

Mayor Adams' recent cuts to 3-K — announced as part of a sweeping plan to offset the growing cost of the migrant crisis — have made some parents wonder how long they can continue to afford living in NYC. trib.al/wc4FPiW

Parents and would-be parents have formed a new organization to fight against these cuts. The launch party took place on Saturday at the Bell House in Gowanus with face painting and games. Babies also sported onesies that read, "I want free child care." fox5ny.com/news/pre-k-3-k…

Comptroller @bradlander calls out the need for a childcare campaign that brings together our middle and working class families. We need to protect and expand pre-K and 3K!

So grateful for this chance to take what I learned from all my patient teachers in gov’t & broader social justice work through the years to support the amazing work of @FordFoundation and its grantees.

The @nytimes gets it: child care costs are causing NYC families to leave. Let's make sure the @NYCMayor gets it, too: 1. Share your concerns about child care united4childcare.org/survey 2. Rally & testify @ City Hall w @CMJenGutierrez for Free Child Care for All on 9/21 @ 9:30AM

"New York is losing families with young children. Between 2019 and the end of 2022, there was a si. Data has shown that Black families in particular have left in significant numbers, citing concerns about affordability. " NYC can fix this nytimes.com/2023/09/11/nyr…

As our gov’t shapes markets to make our economy green and competitive, we need to make sure families have the care they need to thrive.  NYC's Pre-K for All showed we can provide care for all well, fast, and democratically.  Thanks to @rooseveltinst for letting me tell the story.

NEW 📰 The overall success of NYC's Pre-K for All demonstrates that the US gov’t can build rapidly without compromising the inclusion of democratic participation. @joshwallacknyc's report shows the promise of using industrial policy for the care economy bit.ly/IndustrialPoli…

@NYCSpeakerAdams and the @NYCCouncil continue to show the way to an early care and education system that works for all New York families and the amazing teachers and staff who support them!
(ARCHIVED) Adrienne Adams@NYCSpeakerAdams

I joined @CMRitaJoseph, @BLACaucusNYC, @NYCCouncil colleagues, and advocates to outline a framework to strengthen NYC’s early childhood education system, ensure provider stability, and bolster our community-based workforce to deliver the quality childcare New Yorkers need.

3-K for All is working. The old “childcare if you qualify” systems are not. That’s why we need universal childcare. Until then, we need to pay providers on time, reach out to families and help them access care, and finish building 3-K for All.

It’s not that families don’t need care, or that the system is large or flawed. More must be done to reach out to and help low-income families – especially families in shelter and immigrant families – navigate bureaucracy to get the care they deserve. nytimes.com/2023/04/10/nyr…

The #NYCCouncil is right to keep pushing for 3-K for All. Demand is high: the admin's data shows universal seats are 87% filled overall, over 90% in 11 districts – in a brand new program, post-pandemic, and with little outreach to families. newsbreak.com/new-york-city-…

This also creates oppy's for more integrated programs and classrooms. We missed chances to make faster progress on this in rolling out Pre-K and we should not make the same mistakes again. (7/7)

Finally, as NYC grows services for kids 0-3, consider expanding by neighborhood, starting with those with the most families in poverty, growing to serve everyone living there, then moving on. This is how we began 3-K expansion and it worked. (6/7)
