There has been a most British story in Tunbridge Wells over the last week. Last weekend, the entire town had its running water shut off. We were told a bad batch of chemicals had been delivered to the water treatment facility and there would be no water for a few hours while a new batch was delivered and deployed. When the evening deadline came, we were told that the water would return in the morning. When the morning came we were told it would return in the evening. When the evening came, we were told it would return the next morning. This went on for 4 days until eventually South East Water, the company responsible, simply stopped making any promises about the water returning at all. Yesterday, after 5 days with no running water, the town's 25,000 households were promised that they would get water shortly. Except it would be the contaminated water this entire thing was started to address. As it stands, some households, mine included, still have no water, while a few do have water which cannot be used for drinking, washing hands or pretty much anything else other than flushing toilets. We're becoming a third world country in real time.

Huge congratulations to our former Chair and President Clare Gerada on becoming a Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords. A lifelong College member and now a Baroness – but first and foremost a grassroots GP who continues to deliver exceptional care to your patients and to fight for the profession you love. You witnessed the power of general practice from a young age, seeing at first-hand the difference your GP father made to his patients’ lives, and we know you will be the most powerful advocate for GPs and patients in the House of Lords. We are so proud of you Clare. You are an inspirational and courageous leader, and this is a historic moment for you and for our College. We wish you every success. @ClareGerada

I’m deeply moved to have been appointed to House of Lords. The NHS has shaped my life, work, & values. it’s where I learned what care, compassion, & public service truly mean. I hope to carry that spirit forward in this new role, speaking up for patients & health professionals
