@balumcarnes Is it a charity or community bookshop by any chance? These kinds of shops will hire staff but realistically can only survive by taking on volunteers, since funding for these outlets is little to none.

@balumcarnes The volunteer role is advertised as two hours per day. There is no way that volunteers would be performing the same duties as booksellers in that short window of time. It also makes clear that the paid staff member is close at hand.

@snowwode @balumcarnes @oh_tuntun How about fulfilling orders, liaising with suppliers, dealing with deliveries plus all the bookshop admin for starters. It’s not just a case of sitting behind a till and selling books.

@FreeLeeValuers @balumcarnes Is it clear? There’s nothing to suggest that they’re replacing paid staff but rather asking for volunteers to help alongside paid staff. As a CIC they probably don’t have the income to pay for additional staff but this doesn’t mean that paid staff roles have been reduced.

@balumcarnes The Community Interest Status of the company has likely given them a false sense of security. You *can* volunteer for a CIC but *not* to replace paid staff (which clearly this is).

If they had gotten rid of paid posts and used volunteers to cover these, that would be illegal. If, however, the volunteer roles are supplementary to the paid posts, that’s completely different.

@Gava471 @chrishall62 Why shouldn’t she be mentioned? She was one of the survivors and her experience and words have as much validity as anyone else’s. Nothing to do with box- ticking.
