As of January 2026, the total U.S. cattle inventory sat at about 86 million head. That's down sharply after years of ranchers liquidating (selling off) herds instead of rebuilding them. Why did this happen? (Government/Bill Gates) Several overlapping factors hit ranchers hard over the last few years: Multi-year drought in major cattle states (Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, etc.) dried up pastures and made it impossible to keep large herds without buying expensive feed. Sky-high feed, fuel, and input costs (corn, hay, fertilizer) — partly from earlier weather issues and inflation — made it unprofitable to feed cattle. ***High interest rates*** made it expensive for ranchers to borrow money to hold onto or expand herds, so many chose to sell while prices were still decent. Once herds shrink this much, it takes 2–3 years minimum to rebuild them (cows have to be kept for breeding instead of slaughter, calves take 18–24 months to reach market weight, etc.). So the tight supply is going to keep prices elevated through the rest of 2026 and likely into 2027–2028. Demand hasn't let up People are still buying steak and beef at restaurants and grocery stores, which keeps upward pressure on prices even with low supply. Exports are also strong. What the prices look like right now (early 2026) Average uncooked beef steak: ~$12.74 per pound (all-time record high). Ribeye, filet, or premium cuts: often $15–$20+/lb at the grocery store, sometimes higher depending on quality and location.
