Doing anything at a world-class level requires intensity.
Intensity isn't really about gritting your teeth. It's about a wholehearted devotion to your craft. You can see intensity in people's face. Their eyes open a little wider and the pierce of their gaze makes it feel like they're zooming into what's in front of them.
Intensity is the defining characteristic of effective entrepreneurs like Frank Slootman, Steve Jobs, and Walt Disney, and the quotes below do a good job of describing it.
All this comes from a piece from @thogge.
He writes: "I have been a part of 3 exceptional startups, and each of them had a culture of intensity, with the most intense being the most successful. I have also observed this across dozens of other startups – those who end up breaking out operate with a very high level of intensity.
Perhaps the best summary of what I mean by intensity is Frank Slootman’s performance culture:
1) Raise the quality bar
2) Increase the speed
3) Narrow the focus
Doing all of these things to an intense degree is what I mean by intensity.
Most startups care about quality, but not intensely. They want to increase speed, but not intensely. They think focus is important, but they don’t focus intensely."
