@CoachWB33 My friend's son is a AAA hockey player. He will likely play juniors one day, then hopefully college. He has representation already. He's 14. There are so many moving parts these days that I get why that is. It is so much different than when I played 30 years ago.

Does every college player have an agent/agency nowadays? Just saw a post where a D2 kid who averaged 4ppg intends to transfer & says to contact his agency. Really? Why?

@1ssve I'm not sure that this opinion is very unpopular. Many people neither want to be a manager nor have the skillset to be a manager, even if they are very good at whatever field it is. And that's totally fine. Managing people is not for everyone.

VERY unpopular opinion: It’s okay to NOT want to be a manager. You can have a fulfilling career and never manage a single person.

@Tazmagor1392 @jjmaples55 Men hit their physical peak around 27. If a guy stays in shape (like athletes), they should be at their peaks well into their 30s. I didn't start to feel a bit weaker physically until about 45. Part of that was lifestyle change, I started focusing on maintenance not strength.

@FrankRo52456258 @redrose_anna Is it in an affluent area? For instance, here in NY such places exist upstate, but they are wealthy from all the NYCers who move there post-retirement. They are able to maintain these small businesses because they 1. understand the approach; and 2. can afford to.

Our community of about 400, plus a couple thousand in the surrounding rural area has a local, family owned barber shop, pharmacy, auto parts store, hardware, feed & seed, several produce and meat markets, 2 building material places, a grocery store, and a gas station, plus three diners, and a local gas station, it can be done. These businesses are family owned and operated, and people in the community are loyal to them.

@bbbeloveddd @_funmachine My hometown has 4K people and is in the (very) rural Midwest. It has an overpriced coffee shop, a tattoo parlor, and--gasp!--gay people. The nearest city of any size is roughly 70 miles away.

@redrose_anna Reality is that these types of "mom & pop" stores work in affluent areas where local customers are less bothered paying 15-20% more & are keenly aware of the value of local businesses. Fact is that many consumers are short-sighted or simply not a position to support such shops.

@Dtsickness @Empty_America I'm unsure about the increased living standards part. What will actually increase living standards would be locals starting businesses that hire locals & the resulting profits being spent locally. Not locals getting cheap toothpaste for profits that leave town.

@Empty_America I used to be a doomer on this but the more I think about it I realize this is just the path of least resistance to getting the masses to increased living standards. Even the poors can afford $1 toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant thanks to mass production supply chains.

Even more depressing, if there was a local business in these places it would just be re-selling stuff bought at the nearest Walmart or Costco. There is no actually existing system for distributing milk and toothbrushes and such outside of that. It's Walmart all the way down.

Absolutely love this. Long Island, the NY Islanders and UBS Arena are partnering to host a D1 tournament. The Empire State Holiday Invitational will happen annually. It's a 5yr deal to start. LIU will be in the tournament every year. Inaugural tournament will be Dec. 28-29, 2026.
