From the Survivor Mitzvah Project, a fantastic organization keeping the memories alive.❤️
Holocaust survivor Yudel watched his entire family and the Jewish community of his Lithuanian town slaughtered. With raw courage and unyielding grief, he compiled a meticulous list of their murderers—names drawn from eyewitness testimony and Gestapo records. His burning purpose: to deliver justice so these killers would finally answer for their crimes.
Yet while Yudel hunted for truth, the U.S. State Department opened its doors wide. The very men who had drenched their hands in Jewish blood were welcomed to America, granted citizenship, and shielded. Jewish survivors, meanwhile, were turned away. The cold rationale? Better to save the Lithuanians from the Russians than to confront their guilt.
Heartbroken but unbroken, Yudel began writing hundreds of anonymous letters. Each one opened with the same haunting words:
“I know what you did.”
Then, in the killers’ own words, he laid bare the horrors they had committed.
One day, a KGB agent knocked on his door. Thankfully, it was “Misha”—a Jewish comrade who had once shared a foxhole with him. When Misha asked if he had sent an anonymous letter, Yudel replied quietly, “Hundreds.” Misha smiled through tears of gratitude: “You saved us years of work and a long trial.”
Yudel never stopped. In the 1980s, he smuggled his ever-growing list to the U.S. State Department. They did nothing—the murderers were now American citizens. In 1991, after Lithuania’s independence, he handed it to the new government.
Again, silence.
Many of the killers had fought for freedom and were now hailed as “war heroes.”
Yudel’s list became his life’s sacred mission, known to officials worldwide. Yet he never lived to see a single day of justice.
By remembering Yudel, we honor every Holocaust survivor who carried unimaginable loss yet found the strength to bear witness.
At The Survivor Mitzvah Project, remembrance cannot remain mere words—it must become action.
Let us honor them with compassion while they are still with us.
The greatest tribute we can offer is to stand with them—now, before it is too late. There are still unacknowledged survivors.
My great grandmother was shot to death with her young child, my great uncle.
This man is a hero.
Thank you Yudel. May your memory be a blessing.
