While I feel for her personal situation, PTO is always subject to business needs. If a top performer is the only one capable of handling a mission-critical client presentation, then being a team player isn't just a corporate buzzword...it’s the job description. ​By refusing to adapt when the company was in a bind, she essentially resigned. Business doesn’t stop because of a wedding, and no single employee is bigger than the client that pays everyone’s salary. If you want 100% guaranteed time off regardless of emergencies, you’re looking for a hobby, not a career. Professionalism requires sacrifice; she chose the wedding, the company chose someone more reliable.

My coworker just got fired for literally the pettiest reason. She was just terminated, and honestly it has me a little scared now. This girl was one of the top performers on our team. She consistently hit her metrics and never caused any problems. Last month, she submitted a PTO request for her sister’s wedding with three weeks’ notice. The manager approved it in the system, so she booked her flight and hotel—none of it was refundable. Then, two days before she was supposed to leave, her manager messaged her on Teams. He said, “Hey, I know you have PTO scheduled, but we really need you for this client presentation. Can you push your trip?” She replied, “No, I can’t. It’s my sister’s wedding. Everything is already booked.” He responded, “Well, this is a really important client, and I need you to be a team player here.” She stood firm and said, “No, I’m taking my approved PTO.” After that, he didn’t respond.

@elonmusk The last time the federal government passed a balanced budget on time was 1997. If ANY company or business, publicly traded or privately owned, failed to pass a functional budget in even 5 years, that company would dismiss most if not all of its c suite.

The reason government programs are so inefficient is that, unlike a commercial company, the feedback loop for improvement is broken, because they have a state-mandated monopoly and can’t go out of business if customers are unhappy. No matter how bad the service is at your DMV (sorry to pick on DMVs), you still have to use your DMV, because it’s a monopoly.
