But McCartney, the British designer behind her namesake label, has also spent her career pushing the industry toward more sustainable, cruelty-free designs. She has pioneered innovative alternatives to animal-based materials while using her platform to encourage broader change across the industry.
“Growing up with animals all around me and not eating animals, not killing them, I began to make connections that I think were more with the planet,” she told TIME in an interview. Today, she is among the four leaders TIME recognizes for doing extraordinary work to confront the climate crisis and shape a more sustainable future.
