The best companies care about making their software fast. - Fast software eliminates cognitive friction. We increasingly spend our time on computers, and most software is some combination of slow + unintuitive. Software feels magical when it bridges performances + optimized interface design—the best software surprisingly works exactly as you hoped. - Fast software signals simplicity, and this is only going to become rarer with LLM-generated code + content. The best companies do a couple things really, really well (and handle all of the complexity behind the scenes). - Fast is relative. LLMs unlock a level of capabilities + speed previously not possible. At the same time, we're only at the beginning of this paradigm shift. State governments spent a combined $64 billion on incarceration in 2021. The median state spent $65k per prisoner. Arkansas spent the least, at just under $23k per prisoner, while Massachusetts spent way over the median: $307k per prisoner. Because MA spends so much per prisoner, they also imprison the fewest people, which I think is the correct way of going about prison. It should cost A LOT to imprison someone. That way we try to avoid imprisoning people and instead prevent crime. Universal basic income would mean a lot less crime and a lot lower recidivism.
