What began as a local dispute over forced land acquisition for the multi-billion-dollar Yamuna Expressway project rapidly escalated into a deadly standoff. The tension reached a boiling point when farmers from Gautam Buddha Nagar district rose against the Mayawati-led BSP government’s land acquisition policy. Local cultivators argued that the state was forcibly taking fertile agricultural land at low, state-determined compensation rates (Rs 50 to 300 per sq metre) only to let private developers flip that same land for massive profits. On May 6, 2011, villagers took three state transport workers hostage. When police forces moved in to rescue them the following day, a brutal three-hour gun battle ensued. The clash left four people dead, two police officers and two farmers. With the state government placing the villages under lockdown, enforcing Section 144 to prevent assembly, and arresting opposition leaders at the borders, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chose a dramatic, unconventional path to bypass the police dragnet. In the early morning hours of May 11, Gandhi slipped past heavy police checkpoints by riding pillion on a supporter’s motorcycle. Clad in a simple kurta-pyjama, he arrived unannounced in Bhatta-Parsaul, surprising both residents and state authorities. Gandhi launched a 19-hour dharna alongside grieving farming families, directly listening to their accounts of alleged police excesses. The high-profile standoff concluded late that night when Uttar Pradesh police officially took him into preventive custody, releasing him a few hours later near the Delhi border. The immense political pressure generated by the Bhatta-Parsaul incident directly catalyzed the overhaul of colonial-era land laws, leading to the passage of the landmark Land Acquisition Act of 2013.

The CBSE introduced a On Screen Marking System (OSM) for Grade 12 Board Examinations which has thrown into chaos the academic futures of lakhs of children across the country. The Grade 12 pass percentage has declined by an unprecedented 3 percentage points (from 88% to 85%) and the process has been plagued by irregularities - blurred and illegible answer sheets, erroneous marking, incorrect answer sheets being attributed to students, payment delays, and outrageous revaluation fees being demanded from students. Now the Education Minister who is presiding over total institutional collapse has finally woken up to this tragedy, more than a week after it first came to light. He’s portraying himself as some saviour by bringing in IIT Kanpur to help address these technical issues. The question really is why these issues were not anticipated? Why did the CBSE and the Ministry not plan carefully before adopting this OSM system? Why did it take the Minister so long to respond to this issue? The Mantri Pradhan owes the country his resignation and the Pradhan Mantri owes us answers to why this Minister - who is openly disrupting the future of India’s students with his ineptitude - has been allowed to continue for so long.

Many more students are having severe breakdowns and attempting suicide. Families are shattered. Our dreams of JEE, NEET and college admissions are finished. We are not numbers. We are your children. Sir, please speak up for us in Parliament and in the media. Raise this national crisis. Demand grace marks of 15-20 in ALL subjects this year for every student failed due to this OSM disaster. This will save 50-60% of us and give us a chance to live. Imagine the stress and anxiety of lakhs of parents of CBSE and NEET students. Most of them will be a poor or middle-class parents who would have struggled but given the best possible education for their children. And what do Modi-Pradhan do?
