Hey San Franciscans, we can do a lot better to make our city safe for everyone by re-designing our streets. We cannot undo the recent tragedy in West Portal; we can learn from it and rebuild our neighborhood. Help make change with this survey survey.alchemer.com/s3/7807748/Wes…

@cyrusphall Yes agree! And it can be a demonstration for what a totally pedestrian West Portal can be like.

However, the description of the space in front of the station sounds lovely. I hope I'll be able to take a coffee from Peet's and sit at a table with a friend, safely talking while trains pull in and out of the station.

At first glance, I'm pleased with what SFMTA is proposing at West Portal. Is it everything I want? Well, no. I want a pedestrianized West Portal, at least the first block. But that was never in the cards, and this is much better than it could have been. sfmta.com/reports/west-p…

@wafoli I think the @vonrocklaw and @WestPortalSF have an opportunity to collaborate constructively in the week of this tragedy, and I urge them to do so. The simple truth is that we need a safer West Portal for everyone! Safer = more vibrant.

After a crash in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood killed a family of 4, city leaders are planning major changes to the area where it happened. “I’m going to make sure that we do something to make it safer,” said Supervisor Myrna Melgar. trib.al/OGRA1iF

@LukeBornheimer There will 100% be a benefit to local businesses and more importantly, everyone walking through West Portal. I want to specifically call on @WestPortalSF to approach the redesign with a collaborative and open approach. Thriving pedestrians make thriving communities.

The planned improvements near West Portal Station will increase safety for all people, especially children, seniors, and people with disabilities who walk, take public transportation, use mobility devices, or bike in the area. The improvements will also benefit local businesses.

SFMTA has announced plans to improve the West Portal Station area — with support from Supervisor Melgar and Mayor Breed — following our related grassroots campaign with over 1,000 supporters! This will make the area safer for all people. Full statement at docs.google.com/document/d/e/2…

Please sign the petition below to close the intersection of West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street to car traffic and make the area safe for people while making public transportation faster and more reliable. With your help, we can make this area better now: actionnetwork.org/letters/westpo…

Two people were killed in West Portal near the intersection of West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street — an intersection with multiple Muni bus and train stops — and SFMTA should close the intersection to car traffic while it studies improvements. Statement ➡️docs.google.com/document/d/e/2…

Closing the intersections nearest transit hubs (e.g. West Portal, Church/Duboce, 4th/King, 4th/Townsend, Embarcadero/Market, 9th between Irving and Judah, etc.) to car traffic would make our city instantly safer while also helping more people shift trips to public transportation.

As an aside, @parul_sehgal writes in the @NewYorker this week that we’ve come to expect everything of storytelling - even saving San Francisco. Her piece is very much worth reading. And I’m going to raise my hand as firmly on the side of storytelling.

This is a thread about why I believe in the future of San Francisco and why I’m starting The Westsider, a weekly newsletter. The media attention is on the doom loop, tech layoffs, and the downtown commercial real estate downturn.
