The diameter of a barrel for a .308 projectile is typically .300 The rifling is cut to .308 and occupies significantly less surface area of the projectile than the inside diameter. It doesnt “machine”, it distorts the shape.

I got sent this video of 235 East 42nd Street at 8am this morning. The construction industry in NYC is a very small town. Now that the FDNY posted these photos it all makes sense. The video is clearly from an existing floor in the 1960 structure, not the new construction portion. The 1960's-1990's were a very low quality era, so it doesn't surprise me that the steel is either bad or designed with a very low safety factor. The fact the modern building engineer didn't add new columns under the addition though just seems crazy to me. By now I imagine they've added temporary shoring all the way up to the 21st floor. We're all very lucky it wasn't much worse. Don't listen to the idiot union Steamfitter (plumber) in other videos saying this wouldn't have happened if it were a union job. That guy doesn't even work on this project, and he isn't an engineer. He's just running his mouth. I've seen union laborers do all the same dumb crap non-union guys do. Also, the DOB had no real way of preventing this. No amount of random inspections would have caught it and they don't do their own structural calculations. They rely on the licensed engineer for that.
