@Jake4VA Seems pretty close actually, if you're measuring from the nearest point in NJ (off the cuff) to the nearest points in Fairfax... He is wrong about the Staunton district, though.

@samshirazim @jimcmcguire Yeah, Staunton town proper would be in the VA-6 University District. The area west of Staunton, further away from NoVA, would be in the Fairfax-anchored lobster district. (and my buddy in Newport News is about 1/2 mile from being in the same district as me, in Arlington).

@jimcmcguire The city of Staunton would be in the new VA-6 which does not include Fairfax County It would be linked to Charlottesville and Harrisonburg

If Virginia redistricting goes through, Staunton, VA will be represented by a Congress member from Fairfax County. Fairfax is farther away from Staunton than it is from New Jersey.

@bryan_eric60309 @DecisionDeskHQ She did but her ticket-mate Jay Jones won by less than 7% on the same ballot. Is this referendum as popular as Spanberger was in early Nov 2025, more like Hashimi or Jones, or as unpopular as Spanberger now (only ~47% approve)? "Yes" is favored, but not by 15.

Virginia's redistricting vote is tomorrow. The Yes campaign has led narrowly in the polls, but the early vote is looking a little redder than it did in 2025. And if independents swing from pro-Spanberger to anti-redistricting, that could be enough for No to win.

@Venable4VA The GOP opposes this on partisan grounds: a gerrymander would hurt them. The Dems support this on partisan grounds: a gerrymander will help them. Voters should oppose this on principled grounds: gerrymandering and naked partisanship are bad for democracy, everywhere.

They keep saying “Vote NO.” but can’t explain why politicians should keep control instead of voters. I’ll take Virginia voters over political insiders every time. It’s called choice! Vote YES.
Fairfax GOP@FairfaxGOP

Ask a Dem to explain why their position on the referendum is correct WITHOUT bringing up Trump or a state other than VA. They can’t. Because it’s not about what’s right for VA, it’s about what’s best for them and their donors who don’t give a hoot about Virginians. VOTE NO NOW

@DavidSa11042009 @ChazNuttycombe You can vote No for partisan reasons, sure, but that's the same argument Yes makes. I voted No because I believe in democracy and in fair elections, even if my preferred candidates lose sometimes.

@ChazNuttycombe VOTE NO! Don’t make the same mistakes California did. A decade of liberal policies have made California a failure by most metrics and more expensive. We pay $8.00 gal for fuel and it has nothing to do with Trump policies. Prevent one party rule in Virginia.

It all comes down to Election Day. The final Virginia early vote (nearly, some mail to come) is ~3% redder than 2025. The Yes team's big, blue localities have to make up for the satellite reductions and keep Election Day vote close enough to win. projects.statenavigate.com/25-26/states/v…

It would be remiss to note that about this time 38 years ago in 1988, the Capitals and Flyers were in overtime of Game 7. Here’s the HTS feed of the extra session and postgame: youtu.be/0u0HS_fuNwQ?fe…

@robgoldbergo @micah_erfan @RealSKeshel Again: agreed. But state level is better than nothing. VA can't control TX or CA but we can make sure that VA has fair elections. It's not a prisoner's dilemma where citizens win by both parties diving to the bottom, it's a suicide pact.

@DerekPederson3 As originally set up the electors could deviate from the populist demagogue. The political parties changed the rules to reinforce their ability to elect partisan demagogues. It's a shame.

The arguments for the Electoral College are all basically terrible and its original purpose (so that elites could block the masses from electing a populist demagogue) is clearly a failure.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

@tedcruz The attempted gerrymander in my VA is craven and anti-democratic. So was the partisan gerrymandering of Texas. So was California. So will be Florida. The blame is on y'all who put party ahead of principle.

@OrsonLangeVA @StatisticUrban Given the independent backlash against gerrymandering, and the Dem Yes vote being slightly weaker than the GOP No vote, projecting 2025 to 2027 is risky. Let's see how this year goes, both votes and governance.

Lots of talk on Spanberger's approval, but I have to be honest: I don't see how it matters. Trump will still be POTUS in 2027, when the VA Senate and House are up, so it would take a miracle for the GOP to win. VA is safe blue federally for 2026. And Spanberger can't run again.

@DrakeMT Robbed of 1st round MTL/BOS but we get 1st round PIT/PHI and BUF/BOS is gonna be fun. I prefer 1-8, but this ain't bad. BOS/MTL still possible in Rd2 and CAR/OTT is the same.

If we had a 1-8 format, which I think most NHL fans want back, we'd have: CAR vs. OTT BUF vs. PHI TBL vs. PIT MTL vs. BOS We're being robbed of the Montreal/Boston rivalry renewal because Gary thinks he knows better.

@thom7002 @miketgould Ending the reign of the two-time defending champ Pens to do it with Kuzy and Ovi stripping Crosby in OT to score the series-clinching goal, then the comeback against Tampa, then dominating Vegas to win the Cup. It was unbelievably good!

@medianvoters @SpecialPuppy1 I mean, both major parties point the finger and gerrymander happily wherever they can. The GOP's been worse lately, RedMap and all, but the Dems don't have any high ground to stand on. Until their dedicated voters put principle ahead of partisanship it'll continue.
