@mattpocockuk I feel like this has always been the case for a big enough system where not just one engineer could build it.

It's crazy to me how much of software development is 'finding the right way to describe something that doesn't exist yet'. It's a language problem. Figure out the right nouns and verbs, and you can build a system. And LLM's are GREAT at helping you with this.

@starter_story @thepatwalls Has the job gotten easier with being bought? Ie. focus on the parts you love and let them deal with the parts you didn't like?

Have you ever scanned an error.log file trying to get an idea of what's going on? I installed codex into the Raspberry pi controlling the flight school status board I've been working on. This morning I asked codex this: "What is the pattern of communication failures since midnight." It replied: What stands out is that today’s failures are concentrated in a 2-minute burst around 03:20-03:22, and they are server-side 500 responses, mostly hitting reservations. There are no Read timed out, DNS, or Network is unreachable errors since midnight today, so the pattern since midnight is a brief backend- error cluster, not a broad connectivity failure.

@paulg I mean 95% were probably AI related so that tracks. Hopefully they have refactored a few times with more modern AIs.

Each Y Combinator batch I ask the startups what percent of their code is written by AI. It passed 75% at least a year ago, maybe two.

I don't think people truly understand what a BILLION dollars is. To hit $1 billion by working for $1,000 a day, you would have had to start working around 700 BC... roughly the time the Ancient Greeks were holding the first Olympic games. 1 billion dollars vs the average salary of a cashier in the U.S. is $29,000. That is 34,483 cashiers. 1 billion dollars is MASSIVE.

@SerWinterGaming Anytime you take something you enjoy and then have to do it each week to make a living I feel like is going to go through this cycle. I get bored playing too but then I just don't play for a few months but when it is your job as well, hard to take that same break.

I’ve been so burnt out of Rust over the past year, that I feel like I’ve just been treating this as a job instead of a passion. Between the divisive updates, the cheaters, the way most people play now, the economy of vending machines, the displaced population, the tech tree and so on, it’s just made my desire to play drop to an all-time low. I needed to get these thoughts out, so I made a video about it all.

@fardarter @RandallKanna Again I would have agreed before Opus 4.6 and Codex 5.4 I just can't anymore. It can write some really good code especially if directed by even a ok engineer.

Realizing that agents writing code means you're just reviewing the code now which is the worst part of being an engineer...

@jtwebman @RandallKanna Code volume matters because code is readable intent. The model will then take your prior iteration as intent for the next round. If it’s introduced things you don’t really intend, the intent you’ve brought to the code is diluted.
