The Institute of International Monetary Research
Staff of the Institute travelled to the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in London yesterday for the final of the Monetary Policy Essay Prize for Undergraduates and Sixth-Formers. Held in conjunction with The Vinson Centre for the Public Understanding of Economics and Entrepreneurship at The University of Buckingham, this is one of our favourite events in the yearly calendar! There have been some changes to the next round of the competition, updates will be revealed soon.

Just discovered an infinite happiness glitch! Please meet Sophia Marie Ivanna Hammond, the most loved little girl who's changed mine and @mariachammond's life forever. She's so smart that she's already learned to pet her big sister (picture below). Christmas has certainly come early in the Hammond household. 👶🎄

@UniOfBuckingham's MSc students' visit to the @bankofengland
The Institute of International Monetary Research@iimr_buckingham

Students from the @uniofbuckingham MSc Money, Banking and Central Banking/Wealth Management programmes joined Institute staff in a visit to the @bankofengland archives last week. This was a rare, behind-the-scenes insight into the extraordinary historical resources kept there. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and our thanks go to everyone at the Bank who gave up their time to make it such a memorable day.

The Bank charged an above market rate in the 1866 crisis, made a profit and the provision of liquidity was not inflationary. The comparison with the Global Financial Crisis experience in the chart attached

During our annual conference, @K_Niemietz discussed the resurgence of socialist ideas, particularly among young people. He argues that these ideas are not new, but rather a return to old, failed ideologies. Watch the video on our YouTube channel: buff.ly/4ff4Ovt

Two fiat currencies can coexist under certain conditions, crucially under free floating rates. In our model the less inflationary currency will gain market share over the other currency (inverse Gresham law). Full paper below (with Schwartz and Damrich): mdpi.com/2227-7099/12/1…

@GeorgeSelgin We focus on how the Thornton-Bagehot criteria were applied in times of a banking crisis back in the 19th c. as compared to the Global Financial Crisis. Of course there is much more to say about Bagehot's ideal monetary system (not one with centralised reserves in the Bank)

No mention at all of Bagehot’s opinion that England would have had no need for a Lender of Last Resort had it not been for the Bank’s un-“natural” privileges? (See oll.libertyfund.org/quotes/bagehot…) Given the article’s title, that’s no minor oversight!
