🚨CALM BEFORE THE STORM? The fear indicator on the US stock market has just fallen to its lowest level in five and a half years; hardly anyone is paying for hedging anymore. For every position you hold, stocks or crypto, the next few weeks will determine whether this thin cushion holds. The put/call ratio is at 0.61. Options traders haven't been this bullish since December 2020. This metric measures the price of hedging; it says little about the direction. Therefore, it's hardly useful for timing. It primarily shows how little buffer the market is currently allowing itself. It rarely falls below the 0.70 line without subsequent repercussions, but such a level represents a state of affairs and doesn't, in itself, trigger anything. Historically, such extremes have often tended to lead to upward movement in the short term. Therefore, I treat this number as a warning light that isn't yet sounding the alarm. The crypto fear index is at 27, indicating fear, not greed. Bitcoin has already completed its sell-off, trading roughly half below its high. The stock market is still waiting for that. A vestige of complacency lingers nonetheless, and I want to be honest about that. Despite the fearful atmosphere, the top traders are predominantly long, with around 60% holding long positions in $BTC perpetual contracts. They sound cautious when they talk, but their books tell a different story. In the coming weeks, I'll be paying less attention to the price and more to whether the stock market loses its composure. The moment someone suddenly starts paying for hedging again would be the first sign for me. So, I have two markets that contradict each other. No one in the stock market has even bothered to get out of the rain yet. Crypto has been standing in the rain for a while now and knows it. What I do know for sure is that the gap between these two sentiments has rarely been as wide as it is now. Gaps of this magnitude will eventually close.
