Miss Betty Boop. We lost her this morning. This funny little chicken hung out with the ducks. She slept with the ducks, and even kind of walked like a duck. I am not sure why she was so odd; she isn’t one we hatched, so I don’t know her background well. We had picked up a little flock of Whiting True Blues, and she was one of them. I had made the horrible mistake of letting her sleep outside the coop last night. She was still in the run, but had snuggled under the ledge of the coop to go to sleep, rather than go in with the others. I left her there when I went to shut the coop door before bed. She avoids the other chickens, and I was thinking that at least she has some space and peace - and she was in the run. I should have picked her up and set her in the coop, with the ducks. The ducks never picked on her, and she often slept with them (I’ve never seen her on a roost). This morning I found her dying. It was fresh and she was still breathing. Something had gotten her by the neck. It was half severed (maybe weasel). I ran in the house to get my husband to finish with his axe (because that is just not something I am good at). I think a real farmer would have culled her a long time ago, here I am crying that our Little Betty Boop had such a rough life and painful end. Raising animals is tough, and not just the physical work. It is emotionally tough. You make mistakes, try to learn, keep pushing forward. You delve into an intimate awareness of the beauty and fragility of life. You walk the line celebrating birth and renewal, while acknowledging and respecting the passing on. The circle of life is a part of your daily life. Farewell Miss Betty Boop. You were a funny and special little hen.

I don't know if you noticed the difference in cake mixes. They used to be 15.25 oz now 13.25 oz. This was posted in a baking group I'm in.... "We’ve talked about the change in the weight of the cake mixes. A friend of mine contacted Betty Crocker about it because a cookie we make with the cake box mix has been flopping lately. Betty Crocker representative called her back and said add 1/4 cup of flour to get it back to original weight. I have not tried it yet but thought I’d share with you all."

@rowdyjeepgirl Of yeah. I'm 0.65 miles away from a trail, but have to ride 3 miles, including that 7 minutes on the street, to get to that spot. An old 2 lane highway used to run right to that spot across a creek. I wish 50 years ago they had the foresight to leave old bridges in place.

I live in a place where you can ride miles and miles of concrete and asphalt biking trail, while simultaneously smelling cow poop, and encountering bald eagles, deer, coyotes, snakes, bobcats, and your Thanksgiving dinner.

I would have had the decency to tell that father that there is 1 deceased female inside the home & we must be 1000% sure before we say a name. I delivered a lot of those damn death notices. I remember all of them & the looks on their faces.

This is the worst thing any parent could ever imagine. Breaks your heart. Painful.
