If I look at the last 15 years of knowing people in startups, and then seeing who became successful and who didn't, I'm starting to see some general patterns The people I know who became successful (and very rich) regularly asked for help and feedback, and then applied that feedback very quickly (think minutes) and shipped fast while maintaining their own vision The people who didn't become successful are the ones who worked on stuff for months/years without asking for help or feedback, or when they did took weeks/months to apply it So I think the feedback -> implement loop and speed of it is possibly very important

Hire out of pain. Don't hire because you think you'll need someone soon or maybe sometime later. Wait until you or your team are actually hurting: working weekends, missing family dinners, dropping balls. That pain is the signal that the role is real. I learned this the hard way after watching founders (including myself) hire ahead of need and end up with people in roles that weren't fully formed yet. When you hire out of pain, you know exactly what the job is because you've been doing it yourself. You can evaluate performance because you know what good looks like. And the new hire knows you'll step back in if they fail, because you were just doing it last week.

@metabase Using CTEs (Common Table Expressions) to break complex queries into readable chunks. Instead of nested subqueries that hurt your brain, write it step by step with WITH clauses. Makes debugging 10x easier. Your future self will thank you.

Uma parada que eu aprendi investindo - mas que vale pra tudo na vida - é que você precisa saber no que não prestar atenção. Tudo na vida consiste em uma estrutura fundamental e um monte de ruído. Só no longo prazo você consegue ver o que era estrutura e o que era ruído. Um monte de gente vai tentar usar o ruído pra te fazer ficar assustado e mudando de estratégia o tempo todo. Em investimento, isso é o cara que fica mudando a carteira a cada semana, porque disseram que "agora tá bom investir em ação", "tal crypto vai explodir", etc Quem faz isso quase sempre perde dinheiro. Porque mudar seus investimentos de lugar tem custo - e correr atrás de ruído dá retorno aleatório. Às vezes vc ganha um pouquinho, às vezes perde um tanto e no longo prazo a tendência é o zero a zero. Na sua carreira é a mesma coisa. Não adianta toda hora ficar correndo atrás do que "o mercado quer". Você tem que escolher algo e se comprometer com aquilo. Depois de um tempo você revê. Mesmo que as suas escolhas não sejam as ideais, isso vai te levar mais longe do que ficar tentando seguir o hype a cada novidade.

Repeat after me: The best software engineers pick up a new language in a few weeks. They can become pretty good in a month or two. The best devs also don’t get bogged down with one language. ESPECIALLY not today when AI makes onboarding to new languages so much easier
