The intolerance was to such a degree that consuming food from the house of a different caste or religion, or even marriage within the same caste but different regionality, could lead to bahishkar (social outcasting) from the caste community. Bajrang Dal caught a 14-year-old Hindu girl with Mohammad Rehan in a deserted area of Roorkee, Uttarakhand. When questioned, the girl claimed she was Muslim and told Bajrang Dal to stop "harassing" them. Police were informed and it turned out she is Hindu — her parents had filed a missing complaint just a day earlier in Rishikesh.
