When Harry Redknapp was Tottenham manager, he said one of the strangest situations he dealt with was Gareth Bale becoming a kind of “curse” in the league. Bale kept playing, but Spurs just were not winning Premier League games when he was in the team.
Redknapp says people still talk as if he did not rate Bale, but he insists he did and that he was desperate to put an end to the whole thing properly.
He even spoke to Sir Alex Ferguson about it.
Sir Alex told him he could not pick a player who had gone twenty five league games without winning, no matter how good he was, because the rest of the squad might start seeing him as a bad omen.
So Redknapp decided to deal with it in his own way.
He brought Bale on late against Burnley when Spurs were already 4-0 up with five minutes to go.
There was no way they were going to fail to win from there, he said.
Robbie Keane went on to score his fourth, it finished 5-0, and Redknapp basically said there you go, curse lifted.
He added that he was glad he did not take Sir Alex’s advice on that one.
