A group of engineering students from Purdue University reported that its licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. Not to be outdone by a Big Ten rival, a chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his customized licking machine required 411 licks to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. (411-364. Go Blue!). Bellarmine University in Louisville recently completed their own controlled study to get an answer to the age-old question. With 130 participants, they recorded their findings by gender, the amount of time taken, and even the color of the Tootsie Pop. You can read all about their experiment here. Rejecting the notion that one needed active college status to undertake the Tootsie Pop licking challenge, a group of junior high students at Swarthmore School used human lickers, reporting an average of 144 licks to reach the center of a Tootsie Pop. Based on the wide range of results from these scientific studies, it is clear that the world may never know how many licks it really takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop.

Before the Scramble for Africa in 1880 compared to Africa in 1913, after it had been invaded, divided, and colonized amongst the European powers. The Scramble for Africa was largely driven by fervent nationalism and competition amongst European powers to obtain natural resources and build an empire. The term 'White Man's Burden' appears during this time in Rudyard Kipling's poem about the Philippine-American War (1899-1902). The term is used as moral justification to support colonial imperialism. Many Western powers during this time actually believed that what they were doing was 'good' because they were bringing 'civilization' to the non-white peoples of the world. In 1870, 10% of Africa had been colonized, and most interactions between Europeans and Africans were strictly tied to ports along the coast. The threat of infectious diseases such as malaria prevented the Europeans from venturing further inland. However, industrialization and technological advancements in communication and transportation - such as railways, telegraphs, and steamships - helped the Europeans to overcome many of the hurdles they faced in colonizing Africa. The development and widespread use of quinine to treat malaria also allowed for the Europeans to expand further inland. By 1914, nearly 90% of Africa had been colonized. The only countries that remained unscathed from Europe's land grab were Ethiopia*, Liberia* and the Dervish state (part of modern-day Somalia). *While Ethiopia was never colonized, it would be occupied by Italy from 1936 to 1941 during the Second World War. *While Liberia was never colonized by European powers, it was founded by the American Colonization Society - a group of white Americans who wanted the enslaved Black people of America to move there. The land was purchased in 1817 from the local tribes, and a few years later had its first settlers from America.
