Our favourite island books: Golding’s classic ‘Lord of the Flies’. Wee boys get stranded on a desert island and most of them turn wild and murderous without any adult supervision. One of the rare books that has a film just as good.

@BretVDB It’s worth remembering, before we all pile-on with the Woolf hate, that these were her private thoughts and first impressions. Written for herself alone, not for likes and interaction on social media.

Virginia Woolf’s diary entries on James Joyce’s Ulysses: “An illiterate, underbred book it seems to me; the book of a self taught working man, and we all know how distressing they are, how egotistic, insistent, raw, striking, and ultimately nauseating. … I finished ‘Ulysses’ and think it is a misfire. Genius it has, I think; but of the inferior water. The book is diffuse. It is brackish. It is pretentious. It is underbred, not only in the obvious sense, but in the literary sense. A first-rate writer, I mean, respects writing too much to be tricky; startling; doing stunts.”

@Joseph_Fasano_ “1984” was written three years before. I think Orwell had it right when he talked about the populace hating who they were told to hate and believing that Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia..

And this was published in 1951. She understood mass media and what it would become in the hands of madness.

In the Netherlands, if a person dies alone, without any family or friends as mourners, a poet will be sent to write a poem and read it at the burial service. It's called the Lonely Funeral Project, and it's just humans being good humans.

I've always talked to him like I do anyone, even as a baby. This + telling him we love him all the time, & my husband being sensitive maternal soul.
