While the #Kaspa community is eagerly looking forward to the release of streams of speech by @hashdag and @MichaelSuttonIL in the Web3Festival, I’d like to share a bit of the prelude – another speech delivered by myself in ConnectHK 2025. Instead of talking about tech/market, I spoke of ethics: the moral dilemma pure decentralization (the value #Kaspa sticks with) is in and why #Kaspa’s trustlessness and permissionlessness nature as a network will prevail in the long run. It may be the first time that you heard someone categorize crypto culture as a mutation of nihilism. @hashdag had a nice discussion of the “code-is-law” tenet in his recent long post. To me, it is just another interpretation of nihilism as code shall have no moral standard. It reminds me of the first post I made with this X Account. It was about whether ETH should roll back for the incident of the Bybit hack. Many may dislike the comment at the first glance, but the underlying ethical value is that such theft is not more or less immoral than any other transfer of coins on the network as it obeys the law of the code. Bitcoin and the crypto land were founded under the spirit that centralized authority and censorship is not just morally abhorrent but also arbitrarily set. The placement of trust to authorize any centralized entity to give permission to actions (as in civil society) is baseless. It is also why human kindness and integrity are unreliable; a well-designed incentive system that motivates people to always make the better (and the right) choice is the solution. In my opinion, many designs infused in #Bitcoin and #Kaspa are economic manifestations of the “veil of ignorance”. As a corollary, it is baseless to set moral standards for anyone here. In a trustless and permissionless network, all participants are self-entitled to allow their own activities while not infringing on the freedom of others. It is (in particular) worth noting this is advantageous to most of us who are powerless, vulnerable, and less accessible to information. However, the challenge here is when Bitcoin and #Kaspa are considered as service providers or products (not just unspoken moral and political attitudes), the consumers and the customers need to make their pick. Unfortunately, consumerism doesn’t care that much about ethical implications. When someone wants to buy something, more frequently the decision to purchase is made dynamically – the consumer compares different offerings and makes its pick, even though in certain cases the final pick of goods doesn’t meet its original needs at all. It is unlikely that people become a #Kaspa maximalist immediately after they see it. It is more likely that we are #Kaspa maximalists after we have been disillusioned by so many soundly fascinating alternatives that turned out to be mere bluffing. Like it or not, #Kaspa’s advantages are all premised on decentralization. For instance, its TPS (even under 10BPS) is no faster than a PoS chain. Nevertheless, the value of this can only be realized when the alternative chains commit “crimes”. This is why I repost such activities every day on my X. I argue such “crimes” are unstoppable and inevitable. It is very easy to see that when the economy is good and the liquidity is good, centralized networks can make a good profit (to perpetuity in their eyes) and there, of course, will be no wrongdoings. When things are not that pleasant anymore, they will manipulate oracles, MEVs, secondary markets, or just issue new tokens for themselves. Every time there is an additional report on how centralized systems caused people to lose money, once more they will be reminded again of the virtues of decentralization. It may take a while, but I am faithful that #Kaspa will prevail eventually in this relativism fight of being better or being good, before restoring the balance of the nihilism of being trustless and permissionless.
