@Strangeland_Elf If you want to prove this contrarian wrong, just point out the entire army of the dead subplot in return of the king, is a huge redemption arc. Most people who attack Tolkien don’t understand him , or his work, tbh. They just want to be “different”

@queenofspeed_ Off memory…basketball , volleyball which I think was in Earl’s Court , and everything else was in the main stadium. Good times. I was friends with someone who did security on the rivers around the stadium, and he gave us a speed boat ride around the Olympic park :)

Terrible news
C20 Society@C20Society

🎢 Very sad news just announced, that the historic Scenic Railway timber rollercoaster at @DreamlandMarg is to permanently close. Built 1919-20, the Grade II* listed ride is the oldest surviving roller coaster in Britain. It is of international importance as the second oldest in Europe, and amongst the five oldest in the world of this prominent twentieth century entertainment structure. It has been restored after major fires in 1949, 1957 and 2008 (by @Hollawaystudio), but has been closed since August 2024, when a fault on a carriage ripped out wood planks from the tracks. A Dreamland spokesperson said: “The Scenic Railway has completed its journey as a rollercoaster and will now take well-earned retirement from operation as a ride." A call-out has now been issued to help 'reimagine' the ride: "This is not the end but a new beginning. We are committed to developing a new long-term vision that will showcase this remarkable structure...so it can continue to be enjoyed by future generations in a fresh and meaningful way. If you are a creative thinker with a practical approach, or a dreamer with a thoughtful and achievable vision, we would love to hear from you. Your ideas will help shape what comes next for this Margate icon."

@queenofspeed_ At least in the 90s and 00s you had a bit of technology (even the internet) but it wasn’t everywhere, and smartphones hadn’t taken over. People still met up in person, more pubs were open etc. In other words, back then you had the best of both worlds.

@queenofspeed_ I agree Maddie. The high street/nightlife were both dying in 2016 Films were dropping in quality &Romanticising any time period usually involves either nostalgia,or looking at things narrowly But, on the whole, I still think the 90s and noughties were generally better than now

@CalumRaasay @AllOutGamerYT @Critical_Scribe Exactly, I remember how astounding and culturally impactful it was then too. It was the talk of the town, everywhere. The story and choices were seen as interesting, the memes were everywhere... Even as late as 2013, it still felt ahead of the curve in terms of size and scale.

@AllOutGamerYT @Critical_Scribe Exactly. Hard to rewind to 2011 and actually to put yourself back into the context of the original release. It was a wild success for a reason. As much as modders will argue the opposite, its longevity is not due to mods. It’s a fun, well crafted and accessible RPG. Rate to find.

Skyrim still has nostalgia and a library of easy to install mods at its disposal. The base game, beyond the exploration and immersive aspect, is very much “just ok” and there has been so many improvements since then. If you’re telling me ESVI being as good as that is only an “if” then what the hell have you guys been doing? You announced it way too early so now people are going to have insane expectations and the fact that you consider Skyrim to be the benchmark to hit tells me this is going to be a Fallout situation where we might have some better combat at the expense of literally everything else.

A former veteran Bethesda developer has said the studio may end up with “hateful comments” even if The Elder Scrolls 6 ends up just being as good as Skyrim. bit.ly/45bA1x7

For some reason, the picture is incorrectly labelled August 1996. (Perhaps it was the date it was framed) But it was pre Klondike conversion, and after Shockwave had opened, so can only have been 1994

Thought I might share this cool aerial photograph of Drayton Manor, taken in 1994; featuring Python, the Para tower, the log flume, and the old garden centre, among many more. This picture used to hang on the walls of the former reception building at the park.

Many, .@kamhall97 including posting urgent letters to London at midnight direct into the travelling post office waiting to leave (you needed, I think an extra penny stamp), and the Tyne-Tees Pullman, still quite grand, with liveried waiters opening the big doors as the train rolled in. There's still a rather lovely ceramic map showing all the places you used to be able to get to by train from York, and the cafe on the bridge was then a signal box. The curve is perfect.
kam@kamhall97

@ClarkeMicah Do you have memories of the station in York? I had a stroll through there a while ago, before a trip to Scarborough, and found it so timeless &filled with light The arches are so carefully curved to fit the railway. Compare it to Birmingham N street, which is a dark boxed dump

My old University at York has sent me this extraordinarily evocative 1960s photograph, as part of a fundraising appeal. The sunny, carefree atmosphere of those strange times is beautifully reproduced.

@queenofspeed_ So basically kids who get jobs purely through their parents, or people who their parents know I have nothing against them. But sometimes you need a bit of challenge in life. Having everything handed to you (holidays or jobs or what not) isn’t as good as it sounds tbh
