LINDY WEST POISONED FEMINISM, by Sarah Ditum (@sarahditum)
Whatever happened to Lindy West?
West’s fans love her for what she is as much as what she writes. She became a role model for fat women who chose self-acceptance over self-hate. In 2015, she married the conventionally attractive musician Ahamefule J Oluo, and presented their relationship as a ‘radical act’ for body positivity.
She appeared to have everything she could desire. But, when Oluo made non-monogamy a condition of being with West, the cracks began to show.
West was insistent that embracing polyamory cured her ‘codependency’, but this former straight-talker’s assertions began to sound hollow. As a committed progressive, being ‘cool’ about polyamory and trans issues had become imperative.
Whatever erotic independence she was theoretically allowed, she doesn’t appear to have pursued it. In fact, her justifications read like nothing but desperately sad cope. The genre of feminism that made West successful also made her, eventually, its prisoner — and a servant to male desires.

Reluctant as I am to commit an act of Masculinity Discourse, the lads in LOTR are good male role models. They're brave and honourable and they like drinking and they're good at fighting but they also sing to each other and write poems and hug and enjoy gardening and shed a tear when appropriate.

PRESS RELEASE: HIGH COURT GRANTS HISTORIC PERMISSION FOR @TMOFCharity The Maggie Oliver Foundation TO CHALLENGE GOVERNMENT ON FAILURE TO ACT ON CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION
This morning the High Court granted permission for charity, The Maggie Oliver Foundation, to challenge the Government on its failure to implement the recommendations of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA). The judgement is a moment of profound significance for survivors of child sexual abuse and for every child in this country whose safety depends on the Government honouring its commitments to reform.
The Court found that following promises from consecutive governments, over the last almost four years, to learn lessons from IICSA to drive improvement in the policy and legislation protecting children, there is a legitimate expectation for them to deliver the inquiry’s twenty recommendations. The judge specifically highlighted the continued permission of use of pain inducing restraint techniques on children, a practice described as amounting to torture by IICSA, as an area where the Government has not justified its failure to act.
The case will now proceed to a full substantive hearing.
Maggie Oliver (former Detective and founder of the Maggie Oliver Foundation) will say:
“Today is a historic day, not just for the Foundation, but for every survivor who has testified, waited and hoped. And it is for every child now and in the future, and for everyone who believes the state’s primary duty is to protect its citizens, especially the most vulnerable. When governments make promises to act and then walk away, children pay the price. Today the court has said, those promises matter.”

A shocking 83% of women aged 16-24 have experienced sexual harassment or intimidation in their sports facility. To tackle the problem leisure operator UK Active, working with Sport England’s @ThisGirlCanUK initiative, has published new guidance for fitness operators on communicating their harassment and safety policies to their customers.
Included in the new guidance is advice on how to handle a case of voyeurism in mixed-sex changing rooms… we know a thing or two about this subject.
@Sport_England boasts about its progress in getting more women and girls to be active yet behind the scenes it actively encourages building designs with ‘built-in harms’. For more than a decade they have promoted mixed-sex changing villages as the default option for new and refurbished swimming pools.
🚩 One-third of leisure centres have NO single-sex changing for swimmers.
🚩 The ‘move to inclusion’ of predatory males in changing rooms with women and children have been a disaster that no amount of guidance to staff will solve.
Our groundbreaking reports on the scale of sexual crimes in leisure centres have exposed the lack of safety provision for women and girls in public spaces.
As a reminder:
🚩 In one year, 257 leisure centres were the crime scenes of 16 rapes, 80 sexual assaults, 66 acts of voyeurism.
🚩 The true numbers are likely to be much higher as there are nearly 900 local authority leisure centres in the UK, and many more privately-run gyms and fitness centres.
Sports Councils talk the talk on safety of women and children but are still wedded to putting us in harm’s way because of their overzealous adherence to mixed-sex changing rooms.
The new guidance on harassment and safety is a step in the right direction from @_ukactive but while women and girls are expected to undress in cubicles next to males the safety issues remain.
The safest changing room is a single sex changing room.
