In this new preprint we ask: What drives #anhedonia? Problems with experiencing pleasure, reward valuation, or reward learning? @jonroiser, @vincentvalton and I reviewed the evidence from mostly cross-sectional studies in depression and schizophrenia psyarxiv.com/cya6r 🧵1/

@hammvrabi @YevKopiika Right, but it’s all a bit nonsensical because they were also not considered German in today’s sense, like that they would have something to do with someone from Hamburg of Frankfurt. Bohemian is probably the best term if we need one. But better to just love the complexity!

@karelkieslich @YevKopiika It indeed is. Julie Kafka (Löwy) too was born German jewish, though. They really weren't considered Czech at the time. I recommend the outstanding three-part biography of Kafka by Reiner Stach

@hammvrabi @YevKopiika Yeah, I actually did read it. Btw, I’m from Prague but have a German surname and lots of German ancestors, so yeah, central Europe doesn’t really fit our clear-cut (and made-up) national categories. And any attempts to do that are just ridiculous and annoy me, from all sides.

@bautramiej @YevKopiika Thanks! One of the few people here who understand that nationality is a 19th century made-up concept that doesn’t really fit many actual real people. Especially in the 1900, people were multiple things at once. Not surprised that it’s a Lithuanian guy who gets this! 💗

@YevKopiika Even harder for many to grasp that it is fair to view Kafka as both Czech, Austrian and Jewish at the same time – same as Adam Mickiewicz can be viewed as Polish, Belarusian and Lithuanian, and Nikolai Gogol as Ukrainian and Russian

@SealOfTheEnd @YevKopiika It’s more complex. His mother was Czech and he considered himself intimately “Bohemian”, but in that era and place, clear ethnic labels were not easy. Btw, in his times, Prague was already for 50 years predominantly Czech speaking – that’s where his sense of minority came from!

@YevKopiika Kafka wasn't a Czech. He was a German-speaking Jew born in Prague, which at the time was maybe half Czech. Sure he spoke Czech, but basically ever educated person at the time spoke both Czech and German.

@KarolNiewitecki @YevKopiika You’re wrong! In fact, for very long, Czech nationalists were specifically rejecting any German-related influences in Czech history. It’s only in the last 20+ years that we’ve started embracing the complex history of the Czech lands. But it’s still controversial for many here!

@YevKopiika Never before heard of such bullshit idea as Kafka being attributed to czechs - they are merely attempting to appropriate him since 1920.

@goodnesswfists @YevKopiika He never lived in Germany. Yes, he wrote in German (bc most Jews in Prague did at the time), but if writing in German makes you German, then Mark Twain was English. Assigning national labels in multinational empires is complex but you definitely can’t do it based on just language

@hammvrabi @YevKopiika Nationality is complex. His mother was Czech and he said “I consider it my mothertongue even if my German is better”. He’s part of German literature but lived in Prague most of life and his works are unlike anything written in Germany but connected to other writers from Bohemia🤷‍♂️

@YevKopiika Though I get the point, in the case of Kafka it's not that easy. He was born as a member of the (big) German jewish minority of Czech majority Prague as an Austrian citizen and only in the aftermath of WW1 became a Czech citizen. His main identity was that of a German jew

@YevKopiika I agree! But as is clear from the replies, even for Kafka people deny he was part of the Czech world. He wrote in German (because empire), but his literary world was unmistakably Czech and Jewish. There simply isn’t Kafka/Rilke/Werfel/etc in Germany! But it’s even worse for UA :(

@MHiznak76200 @veronik81490261 @JayinKyiv You guys elected Yanukovich, twice. So could see how this works? Babiš obviously won because he managed to convince his voters he is pro-🇺🇦, and emphasised domestic issues. It IS our responsibility, but it’s a mistake to lump in the other half of CZ who are fiercely pro-🇺🇦

@bock_orphan2 @petr_sefcik @JayinKyiv I agree on responsibility. But: 1) Will you say France is not ready to be part of civilised western world if they vote in Le Pen? 2) It’s a mistake to forget that half of CZ is on your side. Rather than throw entire CZ to Putin, work with those allies – you might need them later

@j_2ross @tom_nuttall @Allassar2 It’s weird to phrase this like an EU democracy thing. Exactly this happens in national politics too, in politics generally. Things often require different solutions than campaign promises, simply because you always have to compromise. It’s messy, but hardly a “democratic deficit”

@tom_nuttall @Allassar2 Which begs the question of democratic legitimacy of the EU - even if that‘s a though one to ask. If anything only really gets done behind closed doors in times of crisis (and often contrary to national electoral campaigm promises), how democractic is it, really?

I think the snail velocity of Russian gains and Ukraine's ability to perform counterattacks taking back some of the territories is a success itself. Mr Oliver forgets that Ukraine is fighting against the biggest country in the world with the largest military stockpiles and natural resources in the world. And we aren't measuring success by Ukraine ability to take over Moscow.
Oliver Carroll@olliecarroll

For every Kupiansk, there is a Myrnohrad and a Siversk. Ukraine's counter-attack in the north has been successful, but things aren't looking so great elsewhere — putting it very mildly. Still, morale has an outsized role in war, and this is the first bit of good news in a while.

@olliecarroll If I told you in 2022 that after 4 years of Russia’s war, you’ll be writing that “For every Kupianks, there is a Myrnohrad and a Siversk”, you’d think I’m crazy. This situation in itself is a massive success of Ukraine, who is fighting the largest country in the world…

@IAPonomarenko This sounds great and would love to watch it. I have only seen the trailer, but the trailer’s beginning really reminds me of this 1963 Czechoslovak New Wave Film “Ikarie XB-1” (filmed before Space Odyssey or Solaris btw!), especially this part:

Friends, if you get the chance, make sure to watch the Ukrainian film U Are The Universe. Right now it’s a big sensation in Ukraine -- everyone’s talking about it here on Twitter. Today I finally made it to our local cinema in Bucha. And what can I say: I’m usually quite skeptical about Ukrainian movies, but this time the filmmakers completely blew me away. It’s an intimate tragicomedy, a tale-parable about a Ukrainian space long-haul trucker in the solitude of space. The story is both very funny and deeply sad, there are lots of humor with Ukrainian flavor, a great soundtrack, and hilarious references to famous space movies. I caught nods to Moon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Martian, and Interstellar, probably also Gravity. The lead actor, Volodymyr Kravchuk -- a comedian and a Ukrainian Armed Forces veteran -- is just pure charisma. I’m almost certain the film will end up on Netflix. The theatrical run has already been extended (I think twice) due to high demand. I’ve never seen a completely sold-out theater for a Ukrainian film before, and I couldn’t even get tickets right away for two days, which is phenomenal for a Ukrainian movie. So definitely watch it. After this film, you’ll love Ukraine even more, even if you’ve never been here. Especially if you’re from France 🙂

@BergqvistRene @JayinKyiv Might just as well kick out Belgium for blocking use of RU assets (& sending very little aid). In FR & DE (and UK), pro-RU parties lead the polls — the problem won’t be solved by pointing fingers at CEE. I am as frustrated as you are, but your diagnosis are solution are misplaced

Polls still showing that Orban will be absolutely obliterated in the coming election, but the Musk/Putin propaganda blitz to support Orban is definitely showing results, with Orban getting a few extra points in the past 3 months. Still behind 10 points.

@BergqvistRene @JayinKyiv Czechia has been a stellar supporter of Ukraine so far. The new government has not yet even been formed and we’ll do what we can to influence it. CEE countries are unfortunately heavily targeted by Russian operations & divided. But kicking us out would do exactly what Putin wants

@partizan2020 @DevanaUkraine Which of these had a secret clause about dividing Eastern Europe with Nazi Germany? Which other countries then carried out joint invasions, deportations, shot local officers and intelligentsia, and held a military parade with the Germans? Detail is also key.

A Ukrainian historian explains to a Russian that World War II was started by two countries: the USSR and the Third Reich. The only difference between them is that the USSR invented excuses about "liberation", while the Nazis honestly declared occupation.

Boj o návrat ukrajinské vlajky na Národním muzeu. Typicky české řešení. Nejdříve se sundá. Pod průhlednou záminkou propagace výstavy lidoopů. Pak už se vlajka nevrátí. Nápadnost české předposranosti ze změny pořádků pod novou vládou @AndrejBabis je samozřejmě čistě náhodná.
