Kenya's livestock farmers' longstanding efforts to keep their activities profitable amid high costs of animal feeds due to perennial shortages of feed ingredients could be exacerbated by continued court cases that have put a damper on possible importation of raw materials for feed manufacture, in spite of many other countries easily depending on GM feed ingredients to manufacture feeds and therefore keeping their livestock industry robust.

Welcome to Day 2 of The #ABBC2025 Symposium!! Day 1 was a huge success as scientists, regulators, the private sector, policymakers, and farmers assembled here made sure to #talksciencefacts. Lusaka, Zambia, has truly lived up to the hype so far!! We had conversations around scientists'- and science communicators'- place in the battle against raging misinformation and disinformation. Some of the key takeaways from yesterday- about how best to finetune communication and defeat falsehoods in science- were: ⭐️Break down the jargon; communicate with society in a language that is easy to understand and to digest. ⭐️Engage legacy media and social media influencers and ensure they understand, and can communicate, complex scientific concepts and new innovations. ⭐️Lobby to have deliberate financing by government to research and development. ⭐️Prepare audiences to spot falsehoods early. ⭐️Prioritize storytelling to connect science to human experiences. ⭐️Scientists need to be more proactive than reactive- and issues that could possibly cause uproar, or discomfort, in society should be addressed before such a time. More is coming up today from #ABBC2025!!! Stay tuned.

Pomp and colour during the first day of #ABBC2025 in Lusaka, Zambia. This massive team, gathered here to #talksciencefacts, will be co-creating solutions to beat misinformation and disinformation and misinformation, both of which have negatively impacted uptake of key scientific innovations in the continent. The best conversations on science have to be had at #ABBC2025!! @vanmeeme @IITA_CGIAR @uwumukiza11 @MizeckChagunda @BarbaraZawedde @ziyaafrica @zubeidahkananu @wanjiru_edna @Taremwa_Martha @saprojnr @ptheuri81 @Bayer @UnzaOfficial @unima_official @karumba_

A bad attitude is like a flat tyre. You cannot reach anywhere until you change it. It's high time to change how we think on science and innovations as Africa- Prof. Richard Oduor, the Registrar, Research, Innovation and Outreach @KenyattaUni during the #ABBC2025

Dr Ndashe Kapula, standing in for Minister for @ZambiaMinistry: "When science is distorted, adoption of significant innovations is greatly affected. Misinformation and disinformation in science have already caused losses in livelihoods, and we now have to act very decisively." #TalkScienceFacts #ABBC2025

High level panel discussion on scientific advancements in Africa, moderated by Dr @BarbaraZawedde. Some key findings: 💡Scientists need to communicate in a simplified, relatable language that end users of research, such as farmers, can understand. 💡There is need to understand the key stakeholders that need engagement in advancing key technologies. 💡Liaising with the media will make it easier for scientists to pass their message to the society. 💡Misinformation and disinformation could result from misunderstanding, not deliberate effort to resist new technology. 💡There is need to first engage scientists who themselves are opposed to new innovations- and who are often easily overlooked. We need to make science a princess, not a queen (Not treat it like royalty that the society should/could fear, but as an admirable figure they should desire.) #TalkScienceFacts #ABBC2025

Among the key discussions in the conference were the gains the country could derive from accelerated uptake of biotech products, and the impact of misinformation on slow uptake. Delegates discussed creating trust among farmers to enhance adoption. #TalkGMOFacts

@afri_isaaa welcomes you to the year 2025, a special one for us in many ways. In August, we shall be having The Africa Biennial Biosciences Communication (ABBC) Symposium (abbcsymposium.org) in Accra, Ghana. We will be telling you more about it in the year. In 2024, your partnership meant the world to us. We achieved a lot together, and it is clear Kenya’s and Africa’s agricultural biotechnology space is better. Thank you. While we celebrate these many achievements, we soldier into 2025 well aware of the burden of misinformation and disinformation. With every new day, the hill gets steeper, and we have to keep getting the right gear to maintain the ascent. With the re-launch of the Africa Science Dialogue portal (afriscidialogue.org) and start of a podcast (webinar.afriscidialogue.org/podcast/) in 2024, we have created a platform for more engagements with different stakeholders and we are certain we shall have more fulfilling moments on these platforms in the year. We trained over 1,000 stakeholders from 14 African countries, empowering early career scientists to participate effectively in global negotiations. Our communication and outreach are about to hit new levels and we will be training more stakeholders. This year, we continue to ask for your partnership as we work together to ensure that our work continues to respond to Africa's evolving needs. Welcome on board flight ISAAA AfriCenter. ✈️

Justice Hon Lawrence Mugambi of The High Court (Kenya) today dismissed petitions challenging the 2022 lifting of the ban on genetically modified organisms (GMO). In his ruling, Justice Mugambi noted that the matter was dealt with by the Environment and Land Court (ELC) in 2023.

I my considered opinion, let's put particular emphasis on substantive intensification with technology. Thank you NTV for highlighting my point. I also agree totally on extension provision. x.com/ntvkenya/statu…

@ntvkenya @NBrygettes Thank you @NBrygettes and @ntvkenya. Indeed farmers need extension services. This cannot be replaced as the body of knowledge keeps expanding. Thank you for highlighting my point on substantive intensification with technology adoption.

Myth: #Africa does not need #GMOs Reality: Africa needs crops that can resist pests and disease, tolerate drought, grow without the extensive use of fertilizer and pesticides, and provide nutritious foods. /1
