@JohnBogleyDC @Boenau At what age did you start to note the lack of hotels and think "wow, you could really drive at a higher speed than 70 here without problems?"

@kasper_malmo @Boenau Two different things. My mom speeding me to the hospital is one thing. Roads in America that are set for 70mph on long stretches are a different thing. I’ve driven over 100 many times on Rt 40 out to Wilmington, NC

One of the two most common arguments against vehicle speed limiters is "what if you need to drive 100 MPH because it's an emergency?!" We all know you've never been in such a circumstance. Besides, the real emergency is driving 100 MPH, putting lives around you in danger. The other common argument is "I don't want Big Brother tracking me." Putting aside the fact that there are ways for vehicle speeds to be limited without the government tracking you, this argument only works in a fantasy land where the government doesn't already know your every move. I don't like it any more than the next person, but doesn't anyone remember what Edward Snowden exposed? Your phone, your apps, your desktop computer, your messages you thought were encrypted... In the real world, people's lives are being forever altered or ended in preventable crashes. Preventable crashes that occurred because selfish people were in a hurry and refused to slow down. This whole debate about Intelligent Speed Assistance and other techniques would go away if we had a culture that valued human life enough to drive carefully.

@JohnBogleyDC @Boenau I like the way that even though you were only a young child you somehow knew that the road your mother was driving on had a speed limit of 70 and you could also, despite the meningitis, assess that it was safe to drive higher than 70 on this road.

You don’t know what emergencies we’ve been in. One of my earliest memories is my mother rushing me to the hospital, running lights. There are long stretches of straight road with no rest stops or hotels with a speed limit of 70 that you can safely go faster on. You seem to want to live in a nanny state

@HarryHamishGray In my house we have 5 adults and two children, requiring a weekly shop, and two fridge/freezers to store it. Our nearest supermarket is a 25 minute drive, let alone cycle. but whatever, you keep thinking about yourself.

@CrusiFex @HarryHamishGray My local Lidl doesn't have a car park, just the spaces on the street outside. There's a few bike racks too.

@HarryHamishGray Rubbish. Lidl is not a convenience store for the high street. It's a supermarket where you are leaving with multiple heavy bags and need immediate access to your car

@GordNordog @but_cyclists Problem is that drivers that are 70+ have too slow a reaction time to be driving, there's quite a small window of being able to drive responsibly.

@but_cyclists All young drivers under 50 years of age are blinkered, they see only a short distance from their seat in any car/van, what with their phones, GPS and music, their brain is not fully engaged on the driving.

@ambivulant @carlafrancome No, it's just you're not making much sense. I'm not sure how you mean that car drivers generate tax revenue if it's not by spending more money.

Listen, I don’t care how we do it. If you hate LTNs fine, but we need to find ways of getting cars off roads so kids can have them back. It’s that simple. Yesterday on our low traffic route home from drama, we travelled in a pack, listening to music on my speaker. As we … 1/2

@kasper_malmo @carlafrancome Not quite, drivers generate tax revenue so ultimately hold sway with contentious schemes that favour other forms of transport.

@kasper_malmo @carlafrancome Not so, shire horse, loaded cart & rider similar gross weight to city car. As for speed, think you’ll find average speed on par with horse & carriage during daylight hours anyhow. Main point is drivers generate tax revenue & pedestrians don’t.

@ambivulant @carlafrancome Yes exactly, the differences being a) the lack of imminent death in the horse and cart scenario due to lower speeds and weight of vehicle and b) the amount of traffic.
