We see different things, hear things differently, pay attention in different moments, and notice in different ways. This can be full of potential and massively confusing all at the same time.

In between places, without enough dialogue, feel disconnected.

@charlie_psych The starting point might be how I am arriving with this patient, what am I bringing or not, and that work starts, as you say Charlie, by looking inside. After which, for the time you are together with the patient, they are the most important person in your life. Colin

What skills are needed? There is undoubtedly a skill to good listening, but this isnt about bringing in 'listening consultants' to train everyone up. The biggest factor in developing listening skills is being listened to yourself- regularly experiencing what it's like. 3/3

It looks like the 10 year plan for Health & Care is going to include reference to the importance of patients & staff feeling listened to (& hopefully BEING listened to). How might this work in reality? 1/3

What if we had some simple guiding vision, like- working towards a healthy, fair society where there are opportunities for everyone to live a good life, & accessible public services when we need them.

We went together to vote at each of the past 5 general elections. As I cast my vote alone, on this sunny blustery day, I had a strong sense that he and I would've been thinking the same way about this pivotal election. How much I miss his wry wit & wisdom about it all.

@ckentone @charlie_psych I am with you on all of this. For some time have worked with Doing and Being, which informs how we do the Doing. More recently, I have realised that even Being is a form of Doing, and now know that to Be is the way...hence Be'ing.

@charlie_psych Interesting to reflect, having just left a “system” Charlie. It’s almost about re-energising intent (for relationships/communication) on a daily basis. I’m thinking about the huddles/meetings where we talk about the “doing” of the day ahead, but rarely about the “being”…..

We dont need more 'evidence' for the importance of relationships, listening & belonging. We all know it If we want a more relational culture how can we prioritise & BE these things as often as possible, & notice how we get pulled away into mindless performance, doing, busyness?

@charlie_psych Agreed, Charlie, a normal thing to do. Listen when someone is speaking...cool and radical today I feel.

@katcolles Wow yeah imagine that Colin! Thanks for this. Appreciate this is romanticising it, but I think of ancestors who would have sat round a fire at the end of each day, just as a normal thing to do😃 Have a lovely evening👋

Listening is a natural human way of being. I imagine people have been good listeners through history. Do we really need training in how to listen? Seems to me it's more about removing the things that get in the way of listening- & unfortunately that's much of modern life & work.

@brigidrussell51 I am doing well, thank you Brigid. Still loving my listening work, as you know I would be. 2023 was more deep diving and evolving for me, planning for 2024 to be getting me and my work out more. Blessings, Colin

In that space I felt there was room for unfolding difference, sameness, curiosity, familiarity, and not knowing. A space without contrived expectations, or blame, or labels. Where voice and silence were equally heard and accepted.

@ArtfulPractice @StefanPowell Until now I have been unaware of any of this. Extraordinary is my initial thought, not in a dismissive way, rather a this needs looking into and to reflect upon way. Thank you for highlighting it. Colin

@katcolles Thanks Colin. I was noticing a mum & her toddler daughter yday, & seeing the space the mum made for her, to go off & explore. Made me think of work relationships too & attachment. Yeah absolutely, this dynamic needs to be replicated throughout, carers need to be cared for too...

How do you make space for people to be themselves & grow? For me, it's about creating a relationship in which a person knows you're there for them; they can try things & explore, knowing you'll be responsive & ready to step fwds to be alongside as & when they need...
