They know @HunterBoone I think it could be part of the reason I was hired and it is why I took the job.
I also did stories about how HPD doesn’t have enough resources to do the work or sometimes follow the law designed to protect tenants. I also did housing court stories. And I did a lot of stories about small biz closing because they can’t afford to pay the building mortgages, taxes, etc. I took the job because NYAA has a membership of thousands of small biz landlords, unlike yours, who use this org and our resources to try and maintain their building because there is no SBS gov office for small landlords.
Kinda bummed about this tweet. Journalism is about painting the entire picture. Your landlord is one example of ownership and then there are tens of thousands of owners (like my own) working full time and operating a few buildings.
That fact that this tweet suggests I have somehow betrayed something or someone is part of the problem.
Treating landlords and tenants as permanent opposing political parties is so dangerous to the collective well being — especially when tens of thousands of rent stabilized owners are some of the last standing small owners in our city.
Like, we’re fueling the polarizing premise, when in reality rent-stabilized renters and owners are largely working class people fighting each other. And everyone is just watch the car crash.
No, that is not the case every single time. I’d love to get your buildings into the hands of one of the small biz owners tho because you deserve ownership who equally cares about tenant well-being. And I see that as feasible. I personally have it and have been speaking to NYAA members living it.
You and your neighbors deserved good ownership. I deeply believe that for the hundreds of tenants I spoke, many living in more egregious conditions than your building. I want to make sure buildings stay with owners who won’t let those things happen and have the fiscal support needed to keep the lights on and be good to their tenants.
Also, I’m not a spokesperson. I share facts with the public. As a journalist and now communicating to journos.
You can text me Hunter if you want to talk more. Happy to discuss my decision and still genuinely thank you for all you’ve done for your neighbors and sharing your story publicly.

Hey @KennyBurgosNY 👋
@katelynnulrich used to do coverage on @HunterBoone’s tenant organizing where his landlord was neglecting and illegally destabilizing his RS units
This landlord playbook to destabilize illegally is what @HousingNY works to protect

Here's @KennyBurgosNY full testimony from today's RGB meeting:

SUMMARY: Burgos asks the RGB to think "differently."
Specifically, noting that the RGB can make differentiated adjustments by building type.
Why? Most rent-stabilized housing is outside the core of Manhattan, built before 1974, and teetering on a fiscal cliff.

Municipal meetings like the RGB are a slept-on civic superpower - they're free to you & you witness most moments shaping decisions about your life.
The meetings can be hard to follow - city meetings sounded like a foreign language to me for years.
Having @KennyBurgosNY and @jaymart222 live-streaming, ready to answer your questions, is a resource. Tune in and @ them!!

Coming up shortly will be live streaming our CEO Kenny Burgos @KennyBurgosNY testimony to the Rent Guidelines Board highlighting the broken rent setting system. Averaging revenues and costs for buildings 100 years old fully taxed with brand new tax abated buildings with one rent level is statistically impossible and frankly absurd.

A wonderful profile by @katie_honan that illustrates an argument that parks advocates often make that the parks department offers fulfilling career paths to many New Yorkers. But budget cuts have undermined that effort.

@katelynnulrich it seems the MO of chatGPT is, at the end of the day, telling you what (it thinks) you want to hear

At the PS 120 voting site in Bay Ridge where poll workers cheer for first time voters like Alexander. He just got his citizenship and felt it was important he made it to the polls. A little feel good stuff for #Election2024 @News12BK
