It’s a curse to know exactly how the world works, how evil operates, how people are constantly being betrayed and lied to and how many have to suffer for the benefit of a few ultra-rich evildoers. It’s a curse because most are blind to reality and attack those who try to help.

@JennMGreenberg Beautiful post- and a good commentary on the current cultural struggle between the generations and genders. Without any understanding of whose we are we can’t understand who we are!

My dad didn’t want me to go to college. He told me that all men would ever view me as was a “piece of meat,” so I should get used to being treated as such. It saddens me, looking back, because I think he genuinely believed this; I think he genuinely thought that all men were sexist abusers like him. He had no hope. No understanding. He said I was better off marrying a rich man, because then (I guess) at least I’d be married to a wealthy misogynist. Educating me, he said, was a waste of money. I could never be more. I could never grow beyond the confines of his opinion of women. In an act of rebellion, I saved up money I’d scrounged at odd jobs and I paid for one semester at the University of Houston by myself. I met Jason, we got married (against my dad’s wishes), and we now have three beautiful daughters. I still remember, after my dad forbade our marriage, asking my mom, “What do we do now?” And she said, “You get married anyway. You get out.” And I said, “I can’t leave you behind.” But she said, “You have to.” On September 30, Jason and I will celebrate 17 years of marriage. He is my best friend. He’s stuck with me through thick and thin, and I’ve supported him through hard times too. We have each other’s backs. We love each other. The misconceptions of the shallow and perverse have no affect on us. I am not a “used mattress” or a “piece of meat.” I am not my father’s daughter. I am a daughter of God. I am the wife of Jason. Don’t tread on me.

At the height of the Cold War, my uncle John F. Kennedy exchanged 26 highly personal letters with the Soviet Premier, Nikita Khrushchev. In his first letter, Krushchev told my uncle that the earth is an ark – we need to preserve it. Through this correspondence, my uncle and Khrushchev realized that they both wanted peace, but that they were surrounded by an intelligence apparatus and by military brass who considered war not only inevitable, but desirable. Sixty years later, my goals are the same. To move beyond simplistic, “us versus them” thinking, to talk to our adversaries, and to preserve this beautiful ark. When America takes the first steps toward peace, we will once again become a true world leader and true moral authority.

@mysteriouskat Freedom without a moral foundation is license. Pornography has been around for millennia Katherine. If everyone decided to ignore it, it would disappear. Those who rationalize it by using the first amendment cannot change what it is: evil.

This is one of the most significant dangers of AI, as it will amplify these emotional co-dependencies. RelationalAI will prove to be most beneficial for the elderly to boost happiness and reduce cognitive decline. But for many, and especially children, the emotional co-dependence will lead to new levels of addiction. And when breaks occur (due to programming changes, software updates, a tool no longer available, etc.), those with these emotional co-dependencies will go through “real” grief cycles, experiencing that loss as though a real loved one has passed (and some will be so hopelessly attached to these RelationalAI avatars, that they will feel as though they cannot go on living without them). When ethicists sound the alarm to hit “pause” on AI, we aren’t just talking about apocalyptic scenarios (which get the most press). We are talking about a significant number of persons worldwide—especially children—who will suffer the worst consequences. We have created a technology capable of making real persons feel a personal connection with what is not a person. What happens when algorithms which were optimized to maximize human engagement with personalized content+ads on screens suddenly become a RelationalAI which (unlike real human relationships) says and does exactly what someone wants (whenever they want it)? Without safeguards around this emotional co-dependence, this application of AI is likely to “tear” at the fabric of “real human relationships” and this will not be healthy long-term. Imagine a world of bachelors and bachelorettes who have no intention, desire, or need to connect IRL. That may not be the the existential threat people imagined AI could bring about, but that is an existential threat.

A philosophical question: Can a human fall in love with an AI?
