Road wear is a function of axle weight to the 4th power. A small car does ~55 *thousand* times as much damage as a pedestrian. If we walked, biked and had trains, our roads would last nearly forever.We have made roads disposable at enormous economic and environmental costs.

A well-preserved 45-metre stretch of a Roman side road (diverticulum) leading to the Appian Way under the McDonald's in Frattocchie, southeast of Rome. The road was discovered during the 2014 construction of the building. McDonald’s decided to sponsor the dig and worked with the archaeological authorities to preserve the road. The uncovered stretch probably led to a villa or a great estate at Bovillae.
