Seven years after Amazon pulled out of Queens for its HQ2, anti-Amazon organizer Zohran Mamdani is mayor and AOC is fundraising off of being right about it - since the project that went to Virginia instead has been disappointing.

So a journalist reporting on the situation in Iran won’t get revenue from American views… Niche creators who post about something like clothing or Lego and have cult followings but live in south east Asia now get next to no revenue. OSINT accounts which are some of the most valuable resources on this site and viewed globally, now get tanked in revenue. This is an utterly daft decision for your global town square. Why wouldn’t you only apply this to political content? Or use sentiment analysis targeting ragebait? Huge blow for a lot of really valuable creators out there who reach global audiences on non-geo specific content.
Nikita Bier@nikitabier

Starting Thursday, we'll be updating our revenue sharing incentives to better reward the content we want on X: We will be giving more weight to impressions from your home region—to encourage content that resonates with people in your country, in neighboring countries and people who speak your language. While we appreciate everyone's opinion on American politics, we hope this will disincentivize gaming the attention of US or Japanese accounts and instead, drive diverse conversations on the platform. We invite creators to start building an audience locally. X will be a much richer community when there's relevant posts for people in all parts of the world.

This family is crammed into a $3900 1 bedroom apartment. A few blocks away A single person who inherited her apartment pays 1300 for a large 2 bedroom. This is one of the key failures of the rent stabilization system. It turns an apartment into an inherited asset that prevents anyone else who might need a two bedroom apartment like a family for example from accessing it ever again. And it happens all over the city. There are massive 5,6,7 bedroom apartments (for real I never believed it myself until I saw it) in pre war buildings in northern Manhattan and the Bronx where large families could be living. The owner also can’t turn them into multiple apartments so more people who need housing can live in new 1 or 2 bedrooms made from old 5,6,7 bedrooms due to a law passed two years ago to stop “Frankensteining”. TL:DR when you hate landlords so much you prevent the availability of more housing and turn apartments into inherited wealth.

@texasrunnerDFW @fintechfrank Do you want the cardiac surgeon to say 'I won't operate on you unless you pay me 100k up front' like a plastic surgeon? It's fucked up to see the pay difference, but it makes sense when you consider elective vs life saving surgery

Stage 3 rectal cancer in a 26 year old. This is what I've been warning about. The incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults has nearly doubled since the early 1990s. We're seeing Stage III and IV in people under 40 with increasing aggressiveness. But the real story here is the treatment. This is dostarlimab, a PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor. Immunotherapy alone. No surgery. No chemo. No radiation. 100% clinical complete response rate in mismatch repair deficient rectal cancers. The immune system did what it was designed to do. We've known since PD-1 inhibitors were approved in 2014 that this was the direction cancer treatment needed to go. The paradigm is shifting. Empower the immune system instead of destroying it.

Pete Hegseth said this was "the first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since WWII" (which is false, but that's beside the point), so I decided to look at what happened in WW2 and... this might surprise no-one: turns out the Nazis were more humane than the Americans. Probably the most abject part here is that the warship had many survivors - 32 to be precise (apnews.com/article/sri-la…) - and the U.S. made zero effort to rescue them, despite it being required by the laws of naval warfare and simply being the honorable thing to do. It took little Sri-Lanka, with its very modest means - especially compared to the $1 trillion US defense budget - to do the honorable thing and launch a (successful) rescue operation. Even the literal Nazis, during WW2, rescued the survivors of ships their U-boats sank. It was considered a matter of basic honor. The history of this is actually interesting: the Nazis rescued survivors all the way until the so-called Laconia Incident in 1942 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconia_i…). The Laconia was a British troopship sunk by U-156, a German U-boat, off the West African coast. Right after the sinking, the Nazis immediately began rescuing over 400 survivors, broadcasting - as was common practice - in plain English their position on open radio channels to all Allied powers nearby, so they wouldn't get attacked during the rescue. That's when a US B-24 "Liberator" bomber attacked the submarine anyway, even though all the rescued survivors were on its foredeck. The B-24 killed dozens of Laconia's survivors with bombs and strafing attacks, forcing U-156 to cast into the sea the remaining survivors that she had rescued and crash dive to avoid being destroyed. The American B-24 pilots mistakenly reported they had sunk U-156, and were awarded medals for bravery... This event completely changed Nazi policy on this matter: Karl Dönitz, commander of the U-boat fleet, issued the "Laconiarefehl" - the Laconia Order - forbidding U-boats from rescuing survivors, because the risk to the submarine was now too high. In other words, the Americans during WW2 essentially forced the Nazis to abandon survivors - from the allied side (!) - at sea. Dönitz at least had an excuse.
