Nepal's Election Commission confirmed on Saturday that the 35-year-old Shah, popularly known as Balen, received 68,348 votes compared to Oli’s 18,734 in the constituency. Thursday’s general election, the first since youth-led protests toppled the previous government in September 2025, saw established parties compete against a new generation of politicians appealing to younger voters. Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) currently holds a majority in the directly elected seats counted so far and is also leading in the proportional representation vote, according to partial official results released on Sunday. Nepal has experienced decades of coalition governments, predominantly dominated by three major parties, including two communist factions. This election tested whether younger voters, including 800,000 first-time voters, could influence a generational shift in political leadership. Shah, a member of Nepal’s hip hop scene, gained national attention with his song Balidan, which addresses themes of sacrifice and has millions of views on YouTube. The September 2025 Gen Z-led protests were triggered by Oli’s ban on social media platforms and escalated over criticisms of political corruption and class inequality. The demonstrations resulted in 77 deaths, with reports indicating that police had been authorized to use lethal force against unarmed protesters. Shah openly supported the demonstrators and criticized Oli for his handling of the unrest. During the campaign, Shah’s RSP released a manifesto promising 1.2 million jobs, measures to reduce forced migration, and a plan to more than double Nepal’s per capita income from $1,447 to $3,000 within five years.
