Ohtani has to spend additional time preparing mentally and physically than a normal player- because preparing as a starting pitcher does require more comprehensive work than playing defense. He’s got to be very time efficient and is clearly more dedicated by a wide margin vs average players. His injury history means that he probably spends significant time in rehabilitation / physical therapy modalities along with cage time/ weight room/ nutrition/ video etc. That being said- a lot of his two way ability is a mental skill in it’s own right as he must parallel process two different concepts of success and effort. This is a compound interest effect because both of his roles strictly revolve around the tunnel of mound to home plate- he knows the way the ball flies that 60 ft better than anyone in the league by now. He has mastered that geometry and that’s why he can do both so well. As a hitter, he understands all the strategies he can face- as a result of thinking adversarially as himself vs himself. Every pitch he throws is a knowledge base for him as a hitter and no hitter has ever thrown as many pitches as Shohei has thrown. He will get even better in the next 3 years.

About Ohtani's outing: With all of the preparation required to be a two-way player, it's remarkable how he's able to maintain high-quality secondary pitches. The best and most memorable Japan NT sides thru the years — certainly in 22, but even going back to 02 — have always managed to combine grace with resilience. Moriyasu knows this, which is why the approach hasn't changed, even though the overall talent level has (for the better)

The only people who don't seem to rate Moriyasu as a manager are Japanese soccer fans and other Japan NT fans... who, btw, have all watched Japan earn one good result after the next against teams that were stronger on paper. It's the weirdest thing #SAMURAIBLUE
