The brutal murder of Susan (60) and Jan Malan (64) on their Mooilande smallholding near Vereeniging fills the heart with such deep sorrow and anger. Less than a week after their three dogs were poisoned and they received a chilling death threat, this loving couple was viciously attacked in their own home. Jan, a former policeman, and Susan, a dedicated children’s court clerk for 20 years, were overpowered as they carried groceries inside. They were stabbed, axed, and Susan’s throat was cut. Their bodies were discovered the next morning by their domestic worker; Susan in the passageway, Jan between the dining and living rooms.
The horror is unimaginable; a scarf over Susan’s face, wounds visible on Jan’s, the home ransacked but their firearms and car left untouched. Just days earlier, Jan had tried to report the threats and poisoned dogs at the police station but was turned away over “jurisdiction problems.” The family even hired extra security, but the attackers struck in broad daylight by breaking a window and lying in wait.
This wasn’t random crime; the premeditation, the savagery, the ignored warnings paint a terrifying picture of the dangers White smallholders face daily. Their daughters, Minetta and Maryke, were left devastated, their parents stolen in the most cruel way.
We remember Susan and Jan Malan with heavy hearts and unwavering resolve. Their story must never be forgotten. Every ignored warning, every brutal attack on our people demands justice and truth.
