Very impressive and important speech by @EU_Commission Commissioner Maria Luis Albuquerque at the Blockchain for Europe conference: "For me, tokenization is about rebuilding the machinery of finance. DLT and tokenization may well become the new operating system of financial markets. Imagine: - A Bulgarian small business raising funds from thousands of micro-investors as easily as large firms issue bonds. - Settlement taking seconds, not days. - Capital markets - traditionally reserved for the few - open to all Europeans. This is about the democratisation of finance, meaning that participation as investors is not limited to the affluent few, but available to all with little to no entry costs. But it can also make markets deeper, more liquid, more accessible, and more globally competitive." The EU has an enormous opportunity to jump start the modernization of its financial system, and finally achieve their longstanding goal of an integrated European capital market and banking union. The Commissioner's vision in seeing this opportunity is impressive and to be commended. 🇪🇺🇪🇺🇪🇺

I’m delighted to share I’ve been awarded an endowed chair @GeorgetownLaw as the Agnes Williams Sesquicentennial Professor of Financial Technology. (It means, among other things, that I now have a title I can’t pronounce).

5/ Also would be great not to use TradFi language for DeFi - hard to say "DeFi is different" if we talk about it in the exact same ways as TradFi tx's. (Even harder to get diff treatment in the legal / reg landscape.) Think 🦆🦆 (as in, DeFi is not)

4/ To that end, I heartily recommend (not legal advice!!) that a dev co and a protocol *not* have the same name so that it's easy to distinguish btw the dev co, the protocol, the DAO, a related token, etc.

3/ Let's properly refer to where & how ppl work in DeFi. If you're pd by a company, you work for a dev co. Say that - "I work for X Labs". If you made a proposal & are pd by a DAO, *then* you "do work for a protocol". If you confuse the 2, ur mixing up the decentralization part.

2/ Can we stop using the word "platform"? What's a platform? The protocol + the front end? Just the protocol? IDK. Ppl in CeFi also use this term to refer to their products. "Platform" doesn't have real meaning. If it's DeFi (smart Ks w pre-programmed rules), it's a "protocol".

A €-backed stablecoin issuedin the US is a vote of confidence in the Euro, by our friends in the US. Who would have thought 10 years ago that anyone in the US would want to issue anything €-backed. Time will tell where the market for this coin is.

It should worry EU policy-makers that non-European companies are visibly leading the launch of #Euro-denominated #stablecoins. That is not exactly what the EU leaders probably expected/hoped for. @ecb @EP_Economics @DrStefanBerger @McGuinnessEU @Lagarde @kerstpe @EU_Finance

@mvanhulten Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion, but not to his/own facts. Your opinion is just that, but on both facts you are way off the mark. We can agree that it needs regulating, not to kill it, but to empower it. Illicit use of crypto is way lower than that of cash or banks.

Agree, but we should also not forget that the ECB is not a policy-maker. They are just a stakeholder! And as influential as they are, they do not create jobs nor do they groom entrepreneurs nor do they pay taxes. The industry does! That should matter most!

@ChrisBrummerDr Flowing from your brain and pen, thus will prove to be a solid piece. Will try to poke holes in it… but am reminded by may late dad’s saying: if you know you are going to fail, don’t try :-). We need new thinking and new paradigms in regulation of defi, Dao’s, etc.
