📈🚅 High-speed rail is not just about faster travel. It can also create spillover tax revenues that help fund maintenance and unlock private investment. 🔗 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐃𝐁𝐈’𝐬 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫: adbi.me/4n32gWd

#WATCH | Mumbai, Maharashtra: On attending the Yashraj Bharati Samman (YBS) 2026 Gratitude Ceremony, Indian-American economist Abhijit Banerjee says, "...What is development? I want to start with the same question, which is, what makes development? I think there are two very standard views you hear all the time, and there's, of course, some truth to them. One of them is that we need to have resources, and essentially, if we have resources, we can solve the problems... The other is that we need self-reliance, and that people need to help themselves and solve their problems... The real problem in education is not the lack of technology, that's not the lack of sophisticated material, it's not the lack of infrastructure. It was the simple fact that teachers don't teach the child; they teach the curriculum. By promoting the opposite, by promoting the idea that you should teach the child and not the curriculum, it's been shown that all over the world, education can improve very fast..." (03.05)

It was a pleasure meeting Takayuki Kobayashi, Chairperson of the Policy Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party, along with two other senior Members of Parliament from Japan’s LDP who are visiting India to further strengthen our bilateral ties. Along with fellow MPs from India and the Japanese Ambassador, we had a meaningful discussion on deepening India–Japan cooperation across trade, technology, infrastructure, education, and strategic partnership. As former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had said, the India–Japan relationship carries “limitless potential.” Every such exchange between our democracies helps translate that vision into stronger people-to-people ties and deeper national partnership. @JapanAmbIndia

Whenever we get into a new domain that we do not have any experience or deep expertise in, I tell people "We are starting at year -5 and we have to work towards year 0, and we will pay tuition (guru dakshina) to the Universe to learn its lessons". In 2005, SaaS itself was at year -5 for us, and since no one was watching us then, the pressure was low! In domains like Karuvi and Arattai, I estimate we are at year -1, heading to year 0. In vTitan Medical Instruments, we paid the tuition and we are now at year 3, and the business is starting to pick up. This framework helps keep us grounded and not get frustrated when we come across the inevitable challenges. I am personally working on a tech project where I am at year -2. I still have to pay the tuition and prove myself!

Poignant feelings! I remember when the Times of India launched its Chennai edition many years ago, they carried a beautiful, full page feature on the origin story of India Cements and other companies down South On how Kallidaikurichi is the hometown of the founders or promoters of some of south India's biggest industrial houses - Eswaran Iyer of the Easun Group, S N N Sankaralinga Iyer of India Cements and the Sanmar Group, K R Sundaram Iyer of Royal Enfield and K S Vaidyanathan of Paterson & Co.  timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/root-of-…

The end of an era Birla-owned UltraTech takes centre stage as it phases out 3 iconic South Indian brands India’s largest cement manufacturer, UltraTech Cement, which acquired The India Cements Ltd (ICL) in December 2024, has now phased out Sankar, along with two other iconic brands of the Chennai-based major, Coromandel and Raasi, starting in April. Sankar Cement — one of independent India's first cement brands that began production in 1949 and played a quiet but crucial role in shaping South India’s landmark projects like the Pamban Bridge and IIT Madras — has quietly reached its sunset moment this month. This is part of a larger strategy by UltraTech, the Aditya Birla Group's flagship company, to unify the marketing process and improve cement quality, bringing all under the UltraTech brand. business-standard.com/companies/news…
