@kevin_inalberta

If something sounds ridiculous, it's probably an attempt at humour. My views are my own and are probably wrong.

Businesses are only taxed on their profit. This is proper. It's not right to be taxed on gross income. Workers, however, are taxed on their gross income, with only a small personal exemption. This personal exemption (currently $16,129) is far less than the reasonable cost of living in Canada. This is not right; the government taxes small incomes that aren't even enough for food, shelter, and transportation. Workers should be taxed like businesses; they should be taxed on their surplus, once costs are taken into account. Since it's not practical for individuals to track their costs and have itemized deductions for each item of food, clothing, shelter, and transportation, the personal exemption should track the reasonable cost of living in Canada. An exemption to income taxes of only $16,129 is an insult to working Canadians, and it is morally wrong; the government should never be taking food from a poor worker's table. The personal exemption to income taxes should be at least double the current level, and probably closer to triple, to reflect the actual cost of living in our country. Do this, and you are treating workers like businesses - taxing them on their surplus, their 'profit.' This would be just. This would be equitable. This would be fair. The current level of taxation is not. The current level of taxation is wrong. Are there any politicians who will commit to stop taxing the working class into poverty?

@bmairs I currently expect the No side to win. If the results are far from that, and we actually vote for independence, it will likely feel surreal.

@kevin_inalberta At least you have taken the time to consider the options and will vote your conscience. I support your right to vote as you please, but I hope you will not be too depressed when the results are far from what your currently expect.

"America pushing Alberta independence!" "Is Elon Musk secretly behind the Alberta independence movement?" "This is all very concerning. Can we really allow American billionaires to have such influence?" "I think it's time we discussed the problematic nature of Twitter, or X or whatever they call that far-right platform, and whether it should be allowed in Canada." "Free speech needs limits, or we will be open to foreign interference. Look at how Elon Musk has spoken in favour of Alberta independence. Can we allow this to continue when the future of our country is at stake?"

@kwquinn Is it a waste to vote for what you think is right, even if the majority disagrees with you?

@vermabharat That's your choice, and I wouldn't want to pressure you one way or the other. Do what feels right to you when the time comes. I was a long time coming to this position, but I don't have any ill will towards those who have a different view.

@kevin_inalberta As much as I am depressed by how things are shaping up in Canada, I don't think I will be voting for seperation. Not sure if I will change my opinion in future.

"As many as 42%" will vote for independence according to Pollara poll in story in today's National Post. Add me to that number. A Liberal majority through backroom deals is the straw that broke the camel's back. Prior to today, I was on the fence. Not anymore. I will be voting YES to Alberta Independence on October 19. Thank you @MarkJCarney for making the decision easier.

@Hoodlum0404 @KER4YEG Of course. If most Albertans vote to stay, we stay in Canada, and I'll still do my best to provide for my family. I will vote for what I think is right, but will accept the will of my fellow Albertans.

From 1882: "The lands of Canada exist for the purposes of local self-government, not as a source of revenue to the federal authority. For revenue purposes the Dominion has recourse to the tariff. The election of a new province implies the possession of the land within its confines, otherwise the province is a paper province, and nothing more. The Dominion Government presumes to deny to Manitoba its undoubted rights, and it also imposes upon this province the duty of maintaining institutions which in all countries are a charge more upon land than upon personality. Thus it is that Mr. Norquay has to make his mendicant pilgrimages to the big lumber camp. Manitoba is disinherited and has to subsist upon the compassion of the Dominion which has ceased to be a counsellor and has become a landlord." When Manitoba became a province in 1870, Ottawa did not grant it the rights to its natural resources. This made it very difficult for the province to bring in revenue to pay for the maintenance and construction of provincial institutions and infrastructure. As the writer of this article laments, Manitoba was therefore no more than a "paper province". To add insult, the Government of Canada denied Manitoba the portion of the district of Keewatin stretching from the present-day Ontario-Manitoba border to Thunder Bay, which was an important trade and transportation route and all part of the Red River trading area, where much infrastructure had already previously been developed, giving this portion to Ontario and in its place, the Government gave Manitoba the portion of Keewatin north of Manitoba where there was little infrastructure and where much of the land was swampy muskeg. Manitoba was "gifted" this land but then forced to pay for its development when it had no means to do so. The entire Northwest (the land which is now the three prairie provinces, as well as the Peace River Country of northeastern B.C.) were cut off from their southern trading route and forced to participate in the federal government's east-west trade monopoly scheme, a lopsided trade relationship which the East benefitted from much more than the West. When Saskatchewan and Alberta became provinces in 1905, they also were refused ownership to their resources-- minerals and lumber. All three provinces were not given the rights to their natural resources until 1930. By then, Manitoba had been a province for 60 years and Alberta and Saskatchewan were provinces for 25 years.

What mechanisms do we have to turn this country around? Voting doesn't work. Our legal system is captured. Feds have done what they pleased, with impunity since 2020. Zero accountability. I am waiting for a Liberal MP murders someone and get away with it. We've seen it already with illegal immigrants. Judges will look the other way.

@kevin_inalberta I have been flip flopping on this so much. One day I'm all in ready to vote right now then next back on the fence. Today @MarkJCarney proved to me democracy is dead in Canada and will be voting yes and my flip flopping is done.

My reasons were sentiment and family ties. That's no longer enough for me when the ruling class subverts our democratic will through backroom deals and is cheered on by the media pundits. I've decided that the future of my children means more than the history of my Canadian ancestors, and so I will vote my conscience and vote "Yes" on October 19.

What possible reason could be given to remain in Canada? It's insanity to remain subservient to a hostile distant master that sees Alberta as a colony to suck billions from, while working to subvert it's main industry for their Net Zero hoax.
