Nothing sours a shift like doing a tricky procedure (that others didn't succeed the prev 3 times) and the patient looks at me & the nurse and says 'you know, they call it the NATIONAL Health Service, but you don't see a lot of 'Nationals' working around here...' 🥲

Was auscultating an eye today to listen for an orbital bruit, and had the ED Reg look at me sympathetically in passing like I’d finally lost my mind. “Awww is that how Neurologists think you use a stethoscope?”

A few friends have recently asked about medicine as a career for their kids doing GCSEs/A levels. This is the proposition as I see it: 🧵 - No income for 5-6 years during your degree - average £80-100k debt at graduation - £29k starting salary

Just came across this old SHO rota of mine... used to stay at least another hour most days to finish up too. Thank goodness these rotas are a thing of the past!

Nearly a year of anaesthetics done before I am a single specialty intensivist forever (I joined as an ex-CMT medic!). I started drawing my experiences this year and found it really helpful to document the journey. So as 2022 comes to a close, here they all are together! 1/🧵

@jfdwolff @mevparekh Getting annoyed isn't a viable long term solution though - I don't want to end up on 3 antihypertensives just to do my job 😅

@mevparekh On AMU we wouldn't get to day 8. If I find a patient on the ward the day after they were meant to go home, I get very annoyed (and annoying).

Cigarette packet calculation; full pay restoration for NHS consultants effective cost to @hmtreasury less than £0.69b, a lower figure for junior doctors. Amount spent by Chancellor on tax cuts etc in last weeks budget was £411b. Don’t tell me we can’t afford Drs pay.

Re-ran the same search this year- FY doctors posts' in their first MONTH of the job. These are deeply concerning, as is the volume which seems to have doubled. We ask again- when will FYs get the support they need? @BMA_JuniorDocs @drcolinm @UKFPO

These are just some of the posts from FY doctors in the last MONTH who are burned out, tired, and unsupported. Behind each post is a story, a person left behind. When will FYs get the support they need? @BMA_JuniorDocs @mindthebleep

Japan has issued a 'red alert' for their hospitals due to their bed occupancy level reaching 59%. Currently, the UK’s is 94.6%. [1] Why are we not more worried? A thread...

40 HOURS for an ambulance?! 3 DAYS and she is still not in hospital?! This is what 12 years of Conservative government has done to our NHS. Utterly, utterly heart-breaking.
