No aid, no minerals By Bertha Tobias "If they don't give us money, let's not give them minerals." This is the sentiment expressed by South Africa's Mineral Resources Minister, Gwede Mantashe, in response to Donald Trump’s announcement of aid suspension to South Africa in light of the Expropriation Act. The tit-for-tat geopolitical diplomatic strategy alluded to by Mantashe must not be easily dismissed. As far back as 2009, legendary Zambian economist Dambisa Moyo warned that Africa’s mental and financial subscription to aid culture, rooted in “liberal sensibilities” which preach that the rich must, unequivocally help the poor, has underdeveloped the continent. thebrief.com.na/2025/02/no-aid… #namibia #aid #minerals

I am deeply saddened by the death of H.E. Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and one of the heroes of African liberation. The late First President of Namibia’s life would continue to be celebrated for his heroic leadership of the people of Namibia not only in the fight for independence from colonial rule, but in laying the foundation for a secure, prosperous and democratic nation. I join the many Africans and others around the world in conveying my condolences to President Nangolo Mbumba and the people of Namibia, his widow, children and the leadership of his SWAPO party.

As neighbours and compatriots, South Africa is united in grief with Namibians who have lost the leader of the Namibian revolution, who is inseparable from our own history of struggle and liberation. Dr Sam Nujoma was an extraordinary freedom fighter who divided his revolutionary programme between Namibia’s own struggle against South African colonialism and the liberation of South Africa from apartheid. In exile and on home soil, he led the Ovambo People’s Organisation, the South West Africa People’s Organisation and the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia against the seemingly unshakeable might of colonial and apartheid authorities and forces. Sam Nujoma inspired the Namibian people to pride and resistance that belied the size of the population. Namibia’s attainment of independence from South Africa in 1990 ignited in us the inevitability of our own liberation. President Nujoma’s leadership of a free Namibia laid the foundation for the solidarity and partnership our two countries share today – a partnership we will continue to deepen as neighbours and friends. We are grateful for the extended lifetime with which Dr Sam Nujoma was blessed and we are grateful for the manner in which he dedicated the many decades of his life to serving his nation. May his soul rest in peace and may our neighbours find healing in his legacy.

It is with great sadness that I woke this morning to the news that the Father of the Namibian Nation, Founding President of Namibia, and Leader of the Namibian Revolution, President Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma, had passed on. After his retirement as President of Namibia in 2005, I had the opportunity in 2008 to meet President Nujoma at his home outside Windhoek. It was one the highlights of my life. I will always treasure those memories. My heartfelt condolences go out to his widow, Mother of the Namibian Nation, uMama Kovambo Nujoma, their children, and the whole of the Namibian Nation. May his great revolutionary Soul Rest In Peace 🙏🏾✊🏾

With the passing of Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma on February 8, 2025, Africa bids farewell to its last surviving founding father of the African Union. As the first President of Namibia (1990–2005) and the leader of the country’s independence struggle, Nujoma’s death marks the end of an era of revolutionary figures who shaped modern Africa. Nujoma was among Africa’s greatest liberation leaders, joining the ranks of Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, Nelson Mandela of South Africa, and Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea. These were visionaries who led their nations to independence and established systems of governance. His leadership not only freed Namibia from South African rule in 1990 but also set the foundation for a stable democracy. For over 40 years, he guided SWAPO through war, diplomacy, and political transformation, ultimately handing over power peacefully to his successor, Hifikipunye Pohamba, in 2005.  Johanna !Uri≠Khos #NBCNews #nbcdigitalnews #nbcDSTV282 #nbcGOtv20 #nbcPlusApp
