I support Ukraine. I support sanity. I support ending American support for the war immediately. I am frankly sick and angered by the sea of well-meaning westerners who have, for 4 1/2 years blindly endorsed continuing American and European military support for Zelensky to keep fighting. Their sentiments are laudable at first blush, but catastrophic in their negative impact on the very ppl and nation we ostensibly seek to help. The reality is this war should never have started (and yes, Putin pulled the trigger on February 24, 2022 - but we laid the foundation eight years earlier when we supported the overthrow of the legally elected government and, of course, continue pressing a military alliance up to the border of Russia). We had many chances to protect Ukrainian ppl and safeguard Ukrainian independence and security with diplomacy - but rejected every opportunity and instead chose a path we knew would lead to war. The Ukrainian people have been paying the price for our inability and unwillingness to take the diplomatic off ramps that have existed over the years. Always the same tired tropes from Western leaders - like Boris Johnson last week - claiming we care about the people of Ukraine and thus want to keep a war going that literally destroys Ukraine, its cities, and it’s people. We provide nothing but misery and the capacity to endure more suffering to them. I care, deeply, about the actual people in Ukraine and advocate the ending of a war that WILL NEVER BE WON, at the earliest possible date. To ignore that military reality is to condemn even more Ukrainian ppl to pointless death.

@ritalichter Вежливость в России сейчас выкручена на максимум. Я четыре месяца этому удивлялся повсеместно. Но это не естественная вежливость, со временем пройдёт. Германию, разумеется, не оправдываю, её уже ничто не оправдает.

Полная ерунда. В Германии люди намного злее, особенно в Берлине. Я после России просто охуела: Там меня отвели девчонки в цех багажа, чтобы достать зарядку запрещенную, здесь на меня наорали за то, что я близко подошла в очереди, чтобы картой кликнуть

I’m from Slovakia, so I know about 1968 quite a lot. Many don’t realize it wasn’t just “Russian” tanks but Soviet forces from Ukraine, along with Polish, Hungarian, and Bulgarian troops, all rolled in under Warsaw Pact fraternal assistance to crush the Prague Spring. And yes, the USSR Politburo was heavily Ukrainian at the time. Funny how people blur Russia = USSR when it fits the story. We didn’t choose Moscow’s back then, and the same game is playing out with NATO expansion today. Warsaw Pact countries “chose” NATO in much the same way they once “chose” Moscow’s boot: with Western financial support broken promises and a fresh empire branding. Comrade, history repeats itself with the same arrogance. The Soviet Union collapsed. The American one is collapsing now. We’ve seen both. Neither “saved” us.

In the Russian language and probably in other Slavic languages it’s not a derogatory term. While there was a lot of racism against people of African origin from the regular folk based primarily on the rejection of people who looked differently, the government propaganda was very much favorable to the African struggle against colonizers, and the flow of students from Africa and the Youth Games and the Olympics produced some mixed marriages and children. It’s still the case in Modern Russia, apart from when they are talking about “refugees” in Europe (mostly Middle Easter/NA, not Subsaharan). The Soviet propaganda was extremely Antisemitic though, so it’s pretty consistent with the modern Left’s stance.
