I won't say it's self-conscious or anything but the recent "good ones" are so hilariously low-effort that it seems charming. Happy Gilmore 2 having a fight in a graveyard exclusively devoted to dead characters from the first movie was a great example.

the Sandler renaissance has as much to do with critical goodwill from Uncut Gems or his (very funny) stand-up, as the films themselves becoming better. maybe not "better." but funnier. you see more Happy Gilmore 2 and Hubie Halloween than "bigger" studio comedies like Pixels.
