Road or trees? Development or consent? A road construction project in Pachwara village of Mahoba has sparked a serious dispute. Farmers allege that nearly 300 green and fruit-bearing trees on their land were cut overnight and that a CC road is being built before the matter has been resolved. The contractor, however, says the work is being carried out with the farmers' consent and claims there were no large trees at the site. Despite histories of exclusion from education, uneven literacy, and lives spent in fields, brick kilns and forests, they published a newspaper. Over twenty-five years, Khabar Lahariya grew from a local paper sold on village newsstands to India's first hyperlocal digital news channel entirely run by women.
